Adam Neumann Biography and Career:
Israeli-American businessman Adam Neumann is well-known for his work as a co-founder of the successful startup WeWork. While he was born in Israel, he spent the majority of his formative years on Kibbutz Nir Am until enlisting in the Israeli Navy at the age of seventeen. Two years later, at the age of twenty-two, he uprooted his life and moved to New York City, United States, where he attended the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. Simultaneously, he expanded his business into the women’s shoe sector and then the newborn clothes market, but he failed at both.
At age 29, he and his friend Miguel McKelvey launched their first shared-office space business. Green Desk was the name of the company. He had a really hard time in elementary and middle school because of his dyslexia. He was unable to learn to read and write until he relocated to the United States. The family relocated to Israel in 1990, settling in Kibbutz Nir Am, which is near the city of Sderot and the Gaza Strip. While he was attending Sha’ar Hanegev School in Sderot, his mother began working in the cancer department at the Soroka University Medical Centre in Beer Sheva.
In spite of having spent his formative years in a number of different places, including Havatzelet Hasharon and Kfar Saba, he ultimately decided to attend high school in the latter. After finishing school, he enrolled in the Israeli Naval Academy to pursue officer training. A graduate of the Naval Academy, he served as an officer in the Israeli Navy for the first five years of his professional life. After that, in 2001, he moved to New York City in the United States to be with his sister, who was well-established there as a model.
Adam Neumann enrolled at New York City’s Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business at the beginning of 2002. As a student there, he entered a business plan competition and pitched his vision for a cooperative lifestyle. However, this only held true during the preliminary stages of the contest. He started his first company while still in school, and it distributed women’s shoes. Having failed at that venture, he moved his attention to the production of baby clothing under labels such as “Egg Baby” and “Krawlers.” Even though it made $2 million in sales, it spent $3 million on operations, making it a money loser.

To increase his income, he convinced the warehouse’s landlord to let him sublet the cubicles. Last but not least, in 2008, he and his great pal Miguel McKelvey, who, like Neumann, was raised with a strong sense of community, opened up shop in San Francisco as an eco-friendly shared-workspace company called Green Desk.
In a short amount of time, GreenDesk leased out over a hundred offices at monthly rates ranging from $350 to $2,400. But in 2009, they made the bold move of selling out to their landlord in order to fund the launch of WeWork. The company was founded by Adam Neumann and his wife, Rebekah Paltrow Neumann. Neumann and McKelvey contacted Brooklyn-based real estate developer Joel Schreiber in 2010 during their search for the perfect location. Schreiber offered $15 million for a 33% ownership position in WeWork. Neumann has been appointed as the company’s new chief executive officer.
Its first store, at 154 Grand Street in New York City’s SoHo area, opened in 2010. Additionally, to providing coworking space, they planned to offer a number of other amenities. They placed a premium on re-establishing a sense of community that they felt had been lost in the West. One would be constructed directly across from the Empire State Building, and the other would be located in the Meatpacking District; both were conceptualized by July 2011. After that, they quickly expanded their business, launching a fourth location in San Francisco in August and a fifth in Tel Aviv the following fall.
They set up shop in a rented office building, where they actively sought clients operating in like industries. One of the things that made them stand out from competing businesses was this. They also provided a number of ancillary services, such as beer bars. Using the WeConnect platform, members of the online community can now barter goods and services with one another. Together with Joel Schreiber and Ken Horn (of Alchemy Properties), he purchased the upper floors of the Woolworth Building in 2012 for $68 million with the intention of turning it into condominiums. He also rented out space in other buildings he had acquired to WeWork.
Under Neumann’s leadership, WeWork evolved into a rapidly increasing lessee of office space by 2014, expanding to every continent except Antarctica. By the beginning of 2015, they had 51 locations across the United States, Europe, and Israel, and their worth had risen to $15 billion by the beginning of the following year. Midway through 2018, the company has 253 locations in 22 countries and was responsible for more than 1.3 million square meters of office space. The company was valued at $47 billion very rapidly after that.
