Alan Rickman Biography and Career:

Alan Rickman was born on February 21, 1946. He was one of four children that Margaret Doreen Rose and Bernard Rickman had. He was born in Hammersmith, London, England, and given the name Alan Rickman. Alan’s father died when he was only eight years old. After that, his mother had a hard time taking care of him and his siblings on her own. He went to “Derwentwater Primary School” in Acton, where he was especially good at calligraphy and painting with watercolors. He got money to go to “Latymer Upper School” in London so he could study there.

This is where he got involved in the drama for the first time. After he finished at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, he went to the Royal College of Art to learn more. During this time, he also started working as a graphic designer for the “Notting Hill Herald,” a well-known local newspaper. Alan Rickman was a famous actor who had worked with the “Royal Shakespeare Company” in the past. When he played “Le Vicomte de Valmont” in the play “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” he first got a lot of attention.

Rickman was a versatile stage actor, so the move to movies was pretty easy for him. Because of how well he played Hans Gruber in the movie “Die Hard,” he ran the risk of always being cast as a bad guy in his next roles. Even though he didn’t have a strong body or the unsettling look in his eyes that is often seen in villains, he did have something else that made him a good choice for playing bad guys.

This talented actor is so good that he only had to play the bad guy in one movie before he became a household name. During his long career, he played a lot of different roles, including comedic and romantic ones. He also acted in movies that were shown on TV, and he won a Golden Globe Award for his role as Grigori Rasputin in “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny,” which was made by HBO.

Because of how he played “Severus Snape” in the “Harry Potter” movie series, he became better known as an actor. After he got his degree, he and a few close friends started a graphic design studio called Graphiti. After three years, he decided to become an actor instead of keeping running the successful studio.

After giving an audition, he was accepted into the well-known “Royal Academy of Dramatic Art” (RADA), where he studied from 1972 to 1974. After he finished his training at RADA, he worked with many British repertory theatres and experimental theatre groups, including the Royal Court Theatre. In 1978, he was in a TV version of one of William Shakespeare’s plays called BBC Television Shakespeare.

In the play “Romeo and Juliet,” he played the part of Tybalt. In 1982, he played the part of “Obadiah Slope” on the British TV show “The Barchester Chronicles.” He got a lot of praise for his work in this TV version of Anthony Trollope’s “Barchester” books. In the action movie “Die Hard,” which came out in 1988, he played “Hans Gruber,” the main bad guy. He became well-known because of this role. Reviewers and experts in the business praised his performance as the sophisticated bad guy, which earned him awards.

In the 1990 fantasy film “Truly, Madly, Deeply,” he played “Jamie,” a cellist who, after dying too soon, comes back to his girlfriend as a ghost and keeps their relationship going. The movie did very well at the box office. In “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” an action movie from 1991 in which he also starred, he played the bad guy again. He became very popular because of how well he played “George,” the Sheriff of Nottingham. In the same year, he played “Sinclair Bryant” in the movie “Close My Eyes,” which was about a rich, successful man whose wife has an affair with someone else.

Several awards were given to the movie. In 1996, he was chosen to play Grigori Rasputin in the biographical TV movie “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny,” for which he won a “Primetime Emmy Award.” Many people think that this part is one of his best, and it won him an award. Even though he was already a well-known actor by the end of the 1990s, his career reached its peak in the 2000s.

In “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” the first movie in the Harry Potter series, which came out in 2001, he played “Severus Snape,” a wizard and professor of potions who is very smart. In the 2002 movie “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” he played the role of “Severus Snape” once again. Because of his role as “Severus Snape” in the hugely popular “Harry Potter” series, he became very well-known.

In later “Harry Potter” movies, like “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (2004) and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” he played the main character, Harry Potter, again (2005). Severus Snape stood out as one of the most complicated and hard-to-understand characters in the Harry Potter books and movies. The character’s true nature wasn’t revealed until the very end of the story. Rickman had the charisma and good looks that were needed to play this role to perfection. After that, he played Severus Snape in all of the Harry Potter movies. The last one was “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part II,” which came out in 2011.

In the 1991 action movie “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” he played the bad guy “Sheriff of Nottingham.” This role got him a lot of praise. This person was the story’s main bad guy.
