Alicia Keys Biography and Career:

Alicia Keys rose to fame in the early 2000s with her unique blend of traditional and contemporary R&B. Songs in A Minor (2001) sold over 10 million records worldwide, launching the then-20-year-long old’s career. In addition to her R&B roots, Keys’ music has grown to include painful love ballads and motivating anthems that appeal to a wide range of listeners without being blatantly commercial. “You Don’t Know My Name” and “No One” were both crossover hits from her subsequent studio albums released in the 2000s and 2010s, The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003).

She also received 10 more Grammy Awards from the Recording Academy. Keys began her third decade with Alicia (2020) and Keys (2021), albums that featured Ed Sheeran, Khalid, and Brandi Carlile among others. Men in Black (Original Soundtrack) Alicia Augello Cook was born in January 1981. Her Italian-American mother raised her and she began creating songs at the age of seven.

Her voice training at the Professional Performing Arts School led to her graduation as class valedictorian at 16 years old. Both Columbias made offers: Columbia University and Columbia Records. Keys tried to balance academic and professional obligations, but found it impossible and preferred to focus solely on music. She signed a contract with Columbia and contributed a song to the Men in Black soundtrack, but problems with the label to her contract being terminated. Keys regrouped by teaming up with Arista Records CEO Clive Davis, but progress on her debut album stopped when Davis was fired in 2000.

Davis quickly established his own label, J Records, and aggressively promoted Keys’ arrival (including an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show). Songs in A Minor, driven by the number one pop single “Fallin’,” was released in June 2001 and went platinum in 10 countries. It spawned a second Top Ten hit, “A Woman’s Worth,” and earned Grammys for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, and Song of the Year, all for “Fallin’.” Keys’ sophomore slump didn’t happen this time. With “If I Ain’t Got You,” “Diary,” and “You Don’t Know My Name,” The Diary of Alicia Keys topped the Billboard 200 in December 2003. ‘You Don’t Know My Name’ won her three Grammys for Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song (‘If I Ain’t Got You), and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

Keys later published Tears for Water: Poems and Lyrics. Unplugged, a live CD/DVD package, continued Keys’ number one streak. In 2007, she starred in Smokin’ Aces and The Nanny Diaries before releasing As I Am in November. It featured her fourth consecutive number-one single, “No One,” which earned her two additional R&B Grammys. In the following year, Superwoman won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Keys returned to the top of the charts in 2009 with the hook on Jay-“Empire Z’s State of Mind,” which won two Grammys in the rap category.

Although it missed the top of the Billboard 200, it went platinum and earned her first number one album in the UK. “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart” and “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” both hit the US Top 40. Our Take on Events Keys married Swizz Beatz, had a kid, worked with Eve on “Speechless,” performed on Kanye West’s all-star track “All of the Lights,” and went on a brief tour marking her debut album’s tenth anniversary.

She penned and co-produced Jennifer Hudson’s “Angel.” Before releasing Girl on Fire, her fifth studio album and first for RCA, she appeared on Emeli Sandé’s (Our Version of Events) and Miguel’s (Kaleidoscope Dream) albums. It was released in November and featured her spouse, Sandé, Salaam Remi, Jeff Bhasker, Frank Ocean, and John Legend. It was her seventh number one album in the US, and she won the Grammy for Best R&B Album that year. In June 2013, VH1 Storytellers was released.

Following that, Keys released two socially aware solo tracks, “We Are Here” and “We Gotta Pray,” which were featured on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack. Queen of Katwe (Original Soundtrack) Keys released “28 Thousand Days” after her second son was born and starred in the second season of Empire, where she recorded “Powerful” with co-star Jussie Smollett. She released “In Common” in May of that year and made her third musical guest appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Following her appearance on The Voice, she wrote “Back to Life” for Queen of Katwe. The album came in November 2016 and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. Keys secretly released Vault, Vol. 1 in April of the following year, featuring previously unreleased material and fresh renditions of older songs. Keys released “Raise a Man” in early 2019 to coincide with hosting the 61st Grammy Awards.

Then came a remix of Pedro Capó’s platinum-selling “Calma,” and hits like “Show Me Love” (with Miguel) and “Underdog” (co-written by Ed Sheeran). Keys finished her seventh album, Alicia, after hosting the 62nd Grammys. It was preceded by two more songs, “So Done” (with Khalid) and “A Beautiful Noise” (featuring Brandi Carlile). With this album, Keys achieved his ninth Top Ten debut on the Billboard 200. She rejoined Keys in November. The album was divided into two halves, “Originals” and “Unlocked,” featuring ten songs in two versions and six new compositions.
