Amanda Gorman Biography and Career:

Amanda Gorman spent her whole childhood in the city of Los Angeles, where she was born. The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough is a collection of poems, and she is the book’s author (2015). She received her education at New Roads, which is located in Santa Monica, as well as at Harvard University, from where she graduated with honors and a degree in sociology. Her artwork and political involvement center on topics like as sexism, racism, marginalization, and oppression within the context of the African diaspora.

In 2014, Gorman was given the honor of being appointed the first Youth Poet Laureate of the city of Los Angeles. In 2017, he was given the honor of being named the first National Youth Poet Laureate for the United States. She has given performances in a variety of prestigious locations, such as the Obama White House, the Library of Congress, Lincoln Center, and on CBS This Morning, amongst others.

He is also the winner of the Poets & Writers Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award, which was presented to him by that organization. She is now working on two novels that will be published by Penguin Random House.

One Pen One Page is a youth writing and leadership program that was established and administered by Gorman, who also founded the non-profit organization that bears his name. In the early months of 2021, she learned that President-elect Joe Biden had chosen her to do an original reading of her poem “The Hill We Climb” during his inauguration. The city of Los Angeles is her home.

The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country will be published by Viking Books for Young Readers in March 2021. She is also the author of the poetry collection The Hill We Climb, which will be published by Viking in September 2021. In 2017, Gorman became the very first person in the history of the United States to be honored with the title of National Youth Poet Laureate. Formerly holding the position of juvenile poet laureate for the city of Los Angeles, she is now the creator and executive director of the nonprofit organization One Pen One Page, which offers free creative writing workshops to impoverished children and teenagers.

Gorman holds the record for being the youngest poet to ever serve in this capacity because of President Biden’s decision to have her original poem “The Hill We Climb” recited during his inauguration on January 20, 2021. The poem was titled “The Hill We Climb.” Additionally, she is the first poet to have a poem commissioned just for the purpose of being read at the Super Bowl. Her poem pays tribute to three different people for the important job that they did during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Amanda Gorman’s family would celebrate Juneteenth by visiting an African American history museum or celebrating and reflecting with the community and church that she attended when she was growing up in Los Angeles.

The holiday, which celebrates the successful abolition of chattel slavery as a result of the American Civil War, will be observed by the federal government of the United States on Sunday for the second year in a row. Gorman, who was the first national youth poet laureate, is curious about how the honor from the federal government would affect festivities.

Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery in the United States and is observed by African Americans and other communities. “We are honoring African American liberty, but it is a liberty that has often arrived later than expected. It is a liberty that was not guaranteed, but it is one that we still have to battle for…including today.”

These fights against injustice are at the center of most of the poetry that Gorman has composed. When she recited “The Hill We Climb” during President Biden’s inauguration a year ago, she was the youngest inaugural poet at the age of 22, and she was the youngest inaugural poet ever.

It was an inauguration that was staged under high security barely two weeks after a mob of supporters of the previous president, Donald Trump, stormed the United States Capitol in a day of fatal white nationalist violence. This inauguration took place just two weeks after the incident.

When asked about the assaults, Gorman said that they should not come as a surprise “if you’re paying attention to the African-American situation.” “It’s a sign of the violence, intolerance, hate, and terrorism that we’ve seen perpetrated upon African Americans for generations,” said one researcher.
