Anne Applebaum Biography and Career:

Anne Applebaum is a member of The Atlantic’s staff writing team. She is also a historian who has won the Pulitzer Prize. Additionally, she holds the position of Senior Fellow at both the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and the Agora Institute.

At the Agora Institute, she is a co-director of the Arena program, which focuses on misinformation and propaganda in the 21st century.


She has been a columnist at the Washington Post for the past fifteen years and was a member of the editorial board there at one time. Between the years 1988 and 1991, she served as the Warsaw correspondent for both the Economist magazine and the Independent newspaper.

During that time, she reported on the fall of communism. In October 2017, the book titled “Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine” was released. In 2018, it was awarded both the Lionel Gelber Prize and the Duff Cooper Prize for its contributions.

Her earlier work, The Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956, was an account of the totalitarian regime that the Soviet Union imposed in Central Europe in the years after the end of World War II. Iron Curtain was not only a nominee for the National Book Award, but it also took home the Cundill Prize for Historical Literature in 2012 as well as the Duke of Westminster Medal.

In addition to that, she is the author of the book titled “Gulag: A History,” in which she recounts the history of the Soviet system of concentration camps and describes life inside the camps. She does this by making extensive use of recently opened Russian archives, in addition to memoirs and interviews. Gulag earned the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 2004 and was also a National Book Award contender.

Between East and West: Across the Borderlands of Europe details a journey that Anne Applebaum took in 1991 through Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine just before the fall of the Soviet Union.

In the spring of 2008, Applebaum was a recipient of the George Herbert Walker Bush and Axel Springer Fellowship from the American Academy in Berlin, Germany. In addition to that, Applebaum held the position of adjunct fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Applebaum expressed her disapproval of the arrest of Roman Polanski in a brief blog post that she published in September 2009. She was accused of whitewashing Polanski’s misdeeds and concealing the fact that her husband was lobbying for his freedom among those who disagreed with her. She reacted to the allegations in a second blog post, stating that she had previously acknowledged her husband’s profession, that she was not acting as a representative for him, and that she “had no notion that the Polish government would or could push for Polanski’s release.”

She was presented with the Estonian Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, third class, in February of 2008. At the year 2010, she was presented with the Hungarian Petofi prize at the House of Terror Museum in Budapest.
