Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, born on June 14, 2002, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and model originally from the state of Kwara in Nigeria. She is also known by her stage name, Ayra Starr. Early in 2021, Ayra Starr achieved mainstream recognition by releasing her eponymous debut extended play and its hit track “Away.” “Away” spent two consecutive weeks at number four on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 and went to number 17 on the US Billboard Top Triller Global, paving the way for the release of her first full-length studio album, 19 & Dangerous, in August 2021.

The album has received generally positive reviews and is mainly called R&B and Afropop in its classification. It was responsible for two songs that peaked in the top forty in Nigeria. The lead track, “Bloody Samaritan,” climbed to the top of the Top 50 list, making history as the first solo song by a female artist to ever achieve the top spot on the chart. She began her recording career in 2020 at Mavin Studios in Lagos, Nigeria, working with producers Louddaaa and Don Jazzy. The 22nd of January, 2021, saw the release of her first extended play under the same title, which Mavin Records issued.

The album is “a topsy-turvy chronicle of love or love-themed situations” and “merges elements of R&B/neo-soul with Afropop percussion.” Ayra Starr said that she wanted to create music for the album that would appeal to listeners of all ages and that it would have a particular resonance with younger listeners. Starr is credited as the sole songwriter for one of the tracks on the EP, while her brother Dami is credited with co-writing the other four songs.

The extended play quickly climbed to the top spot on the Nigerian iTunes Store and Apple Music service album charts. It has reached the same place on Apple Music in 4 more countries as of March 2021 and has racked up over 15 million streams across Spotify, YouTube, and Audio Mack. The project gave birth to the famous song “Away,” which reached its highest position on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 and its most elevated position on the US Billboard Top Triller Global. The music video that went along with it also debuted on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10.

OkayAfrica selected the song as one of the nine best Nigerian songs released in January 2021 and placed it on their list. Between March and April, Ayra Starr disseminated updated versions of her songs “Ija” and “Away” that featured Tokimonsta and Lilo, respectively. Around the same time, Crayon published their extended play (EP) Midnight, which included her vocals on the song “In Sync.”She performed at the Virtual Culture Show dubbed The Olori Awards hosted by the UC Berkeley Nigerian Students Association.

The official music video for her song “DITR” was uploaded to YouTube by Mavin on the 28th of April 2021. In June of 2021, another music video for a song named “Sare” was made available to the public. Afolabi Olalekan is responsible for the direction of both music videos. Ayra Starr performed on the season finale of Nigerian Idol, which took place on July 11, 2021.
