Barry Gibb Biography and Career:

Pop legend Barry Gibb is one of three brothers who performed in the internationally successful band the Bee Gees. Gibb and his brothers gained stardom in the ’60s with unique lyrical, harmony-driven psychedelic music heavily influenced by the Beatles. Their big break came with the release of the disco-themed Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in 1977. It was a game-changer for the Bee Gees and became a cultural phenomenon.

Gibb capitalized on this breakthrough by releasing his first solo album, Now Voyager, in 1984. He has had some success in ghostwriting, producing, and recording. He collaborated with Barbra Streisand on the single “Guilty,” which peaked in the top five of the Adult Contemporary chart. He co-wrote and produced Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s classic “Islands in the Stream” in 1983.

Gibb is one of the most successful composers in musical history, with at least 16 number-one hits to his credit. Despite his hectic studio schedule, Gibb has found time to release two solo albums: 2016’s In the Now included all-new material, while 2021’s Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers’ Songbook, Vol. 1, drew on his past with the Bee Gees.

Barry and his brothers, twins Maurice and Robin, started as young musicians when they were born on the Isle of Man in 1946. The Rattlesnakes were a skiffle band formed in Manchester when its members relocated there in 1953. After relocating to Australia in the latter ’50s, the brothers changed their name to the Bee Gees. Festival Records found potential in the band’s primitive rock & roll sound and signed the group.

Barry wrote every song they recorded, and the group issued many albums and singles until finding success with “Spicks & Specks” in the latter half of 1966. At this time, the brothers had returned to London. They signed with Polydor, largely due to Robert Stigwood, an employee at North End Music Stores (NEMS) who took over management duties in a move reminiscent of Brian Epstein’s.

A fresh composition cooperation between the brothers led to the recording of “New York Mine Disaster 1941,” their debut hit in the United Kingdom. The song and the Bee Gees were immediately successful in the United Kingdom. And in the U.S., they have had many successful releases. Barry, meantime, penned tunes for the likes of the Marbles, Samantha Sang, and P.P. Arnold.

With the split of the Bee Gees in 1969, due to the members’ tumultuous personal relationships, Barry began contemplating a solo career. After starting to create an album that was going to be named The Kid’s No Good, he decided to go back to working with his brothers after only releasing one song, “I will Kiss Your Memories” (1970). A handful more singles followed, including “Lonely Day” and “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart?” but then their career started a steady fall.

The album Saturday Night Fever, released in 1977, and its accompanying disco songs revitalized the genre. It created international stars from the Gibb brothers, particularly Barry, whose falsetto took center stage on almost every track. In 1978, the group even made the disastrous effort to break into the film industry with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The Bee Gees’ decline in popularity led to Barry focusing more on songwriting and producing for other acts. Frankie Valli’s 1978 rendition of the Grease theme song was one of his most successful solo works. He began working as a producer with lyricist Albhy Galuten and engineer Karl Richardson during this time.

He collaborated on albums by his younger brother Andy and, most famously, Barbra Streisand’s landmark 1980 release Guilty. The Gibb brothers continued to collaborate as songwriters even after they began recording their music, such as on the Staying Alive soundtrack from 1983 or on “Heartbreaker” by Dionne Warwick for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.

Also in 1984, Gibb released his debut solo album, Now Voyager, after signing a solo contract with Arista Records. He and Richardson co-produced the album; he and his two brothers created all of the songs, and Olivia Newton-John sang a duet with them on “Face to Face.” In 1985, he started recording songs for a second solo album, tentatively named Moonlight Madness, but he never completed it. Instead of pursuing a solo career, Gibb returned to the Bee Gees, who had begun recording a new album in 1987 but were sidetracked by Andy Gibb’s sad death.

High Civilization and Size Is not Everything was released by the Gibb brothers in the 1990s, and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. After collaborating with Michael Jackson in 2002, Barry wrote songs for Tina Turner and Cliff Richard.

The death of Maurice Gibb in early 2003 was yet another devastating blow to the Gibb family. After his passing, Robin Gibb resumed his solo career, and the Bee Gees returned to being a side project. He collaborated with Cliff Richard on tracks, sang on his son Steve’s 2004 solo single “Living in the Rain,” and even appeared on the cover of Barbra Streisand’s 2005 album Guilty Pleasures.

In 2006, Rhino began releasing remastered versions of the Bee Gees’ first U.K. albums, and Gibb made a string of demo compilations available on iTunes. Doctor Mann and “Underworld” are two 2004 tracks made available as singles. He also started working on a country record after purchasing Johnny Cash’s old house in Tennessee.

One song from it, “Drown on the River,” was released as a single in 2007 and used on the film Deal’s soundtrack, but the album itself was never finished. There was not much happening in the years that followed. There were rumors that Gibb might participate in a Gorillaz record, but he allegedly declined due to hearing issues. The Gibbs were devastated again in May 2012 when Robin died from cancer.

Later in 2012, Barry Gibb made another appearance, this time at the Grand Ole Opry alongside Ricky Skaggs. In Skaggs’ Music to My Ears (2012) CD, he sang harmony. Gibb then embarked on a tour of Australia and the United Kingdom. 2013: with son Steve and Samantha, Maurice’s daughter, in the band. In 2014, he added a few North American dates to the tour and sang “When I am Sixty-Four” cover on a Paul McCartney tribute album.

Gibb released a new bluegrass album, Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers’ Songbook Vol. 1, in 2021. The first album was a collaborative effort that included artists such as Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Jason Isbell, and Miranda Lambert. It topped the U.K. charts and peaked at #15 on the Billboard 200. Ranking albums.
