Wide receiver Chad Johnson played American football. The Bengals selected him in Round 2 of the 2001 N.F.L. Draft. He played collegiate football at Oregon State. After being cut by the Bengals, he spent a season with the New England Patriots. Johnson has been named an All-Pro three times and to the Pro Bowl five times. Before the 2008 season began, he officially changed his last name from Johnson to Ochocinco.

In 1997, Johnson, a 1996 Miami Beach Senior High School graduate, enrolled at Santa Monica College and played with Steve Smith, a future standout wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers. After being heavily pursued by then-Oregon State head coach Dennis Erickson, he moved to Corvallis in 2000. T.J. Green will also be a member of the Bengals in the future. Houshmandzadeh, that year his team went 11-1 and won the Fiesta Bowl by defeating Notre Dame. In a game against Stanford, he caught a touchdown pass for 97 yards, setting a new school record.

The Cincinnati Bengals drafted Chad Johnson in the second round (36th overall) at the 2001 N.F.L. Draft. As a rookie, Johnson played a fair amount of snaps and finished with 28 receptions for 329 yards and a score. With 1,355 receiving yards in 2003, he established a Bengals record. Against the Cleveland Browns, he had 117 receiving yards, and his team won 58-48. In 2005, he set a new record by gaining 1,432 yards. From 2003 through 2007, he made the Pro Bowl yearly and led the A.F.C. in receiving yards for four consecutive seasons.

Johnson caught Carson Palmer’s opening-game, season-opening touchdown throw for a 39-yard touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. After scoring, he reached for a jacket that said “Future H.O.F. 20?? “, a reference to the jackets worn by Pro Football Hall of Fame honorees. In all, Johnson caught 5 passes for 95 yards and 1 score. He then had 11 receptions for 209 yards and 2 scores in a 51-45 defeat to the Cleveland Browns the following week. He now holds the Bengals franchise record for receiving yards with 7,229. Isaac Curtis previously held this record.

Johnson was taken off the field in the fourth quarter of the Bengals’ Week 9 defeat to the Buffalo Bills on a stretcher with a suspected head injury. In the hospital, Johnson reportedly began to make some progress. He ended up with three receptions for 48 yards in the contest. He did not lose any time from playing because of the injury, and the results of a C.T. scan to check for nerve damage came back negative.

Johnson failed to score a touchdown or gain more than 86 yards in the following two games. For the sixth year running, this put him over 1,000 receiving yards. In addition, he now has the Bengal’s record for most catches, which he overtook Carl Pickens to set.

Both Johnson and Houshmandzadeh surpassed 1,000 receiving yards by week 15. A defeat that week against the San Francisco 49ers confirmed a losing season for the franchise for the first time since 2002. In the season-ending victory against the Miami Dolphins, Ocho Cinco caught four passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his total for the year to 93 receptions for 1,440 yards and eight scores.

It was the third time in his career that he set a new single-season record for receiving yards with the Bengals. His yardage total was third, his receptions ranked 12th, and his touchdown catches were tied for 15th in the N.F.L. Unfortunately, his teammate T.J. was named for the 2008 Pro Bowl team, leaving him out. Houshmandzadeh. Since he first appeared in a game as a rookie in 2001, he has played in 103 straight.

The Bengals have never considered dealing Johnson, and head coach Marvin Lewis said as much on February 14, 2008. The Washington Redskins have reportedly been interested in signing Johnson. Although Lewis claims he has not spoken to Johnson since the last regular season game, Johnson reportedly responded to questions regarding trade speculations by saying, “Call me, Dan” in reference to Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. The Washington Redskins offered the Cincinnati Bengals two first-round picks in the 2008 and 2009 NFL Drafts in exchange for Johnson, but the Bengals turned down the deal on April 22.

Johnson said on NFL Total Access that he was not seeking a rise in salary from the Bengals but rather a move away from Cincinnati. After that, Johnson stopped talking to the media and attended no off-season training sessions or practices. Johnson requested a trade on April 16 in anticipation of or shortly after the 2008 NFL Draft.

In addition to Palmer’s comments concerning Johnson reporting to the Bengals’ minicamp, Johnson has said that he will not attend any events involving the team, whether required or optional. On April 17, another member of the team, T.J. According to Houshmandzadeh, who spoke with ESPN, the Bengals would be wise to trade Johnson.

Johnson went down with a left shoulder injury during the Bengals’ preseason game against the Detroit Lions on August 17. Later examination revealed that he had suffered a partial tear to the labrum, but initial reports indicated it was a mild separation. “We will be able to treat it conservatively, and he must regain his strength. It came out and went right back in on the pitch,” said Marvin Lewis. Johnson said for the first time in eight days, “I am lifting my usual weight. I do everything normally now. Everything.”

After being traded to the New England Patriots in the 2011 offseason, he renegotiated a three-year contract with the team. He played just one season with the Patriots and caught only 15 catches before being cut on June 7, 2012.
