Clay Carroll Biography and Career:

Clay Carroll was a relief superstar during the era of the fireman, a bullpen stalwart who could be called upon for several scenarios. From the end of June 1968 to the conclusion of the 1975 season, he set a record for saves with 119 and had a 1.39 ERA in 22 playoff appearances for the Cincinnati Reds.

Carroll made the All-Star squad in 1971 and 1972 for the National League, and in 1972 he saved a record-setting 37 games, earning him the title of The Sporting News Fireman of the Year. He won Game 4 of the 1970 Series and Game 7 of the 1975 Series, the latter of which secured the Reds’ first title in 35 years.

Hawk was a nickname given to Carroll by his fellow athletes. The Cincinnati bullpen enjoyed his intense competition and relaxed demeanor. In the bullpen, he once remarked, “Did you ever hit anybody on the head with a ripe tomato?” One reviewer noted, “It sure makes a funny noise, and there’s a way it flattens out to mess up a guy’s hair.” He took charge of the Big Red Machine’s unheralded but crucial relief corps, including Carroll, Pedro Borbon, Tom Hall, and, subsequently, Will McEnaney and Rawly Eastwick.

On May 2, 1941, Clay Palmer Carroll was born in Clanton, Alabama, a small textile mill town about halfway between Birmingham and Montgomery. Carroll’s first stop on his professional baseball journey was with the Davenport (Iowa) Cubs of the Class D Midwest League.

The following season, he went 14-7 for Boise striking out 223 batters in 181 innings and completing 16 games to lead the Class C Pioneer League in wins. He divided the 1963 and 1964 seasons between the Braves’ top two affiliates, Austin of the Texas League and Denver of the Pacific Coast League. Carroll got the call to Milwaukee in September of 1964 after a two-year stretch in which he won 11 and 10 games, respectively.

Carroll’s debut on the Broadway stage was a huge success. He started 11 games, threw 21 1/3 innings, and had a 1.77 ERA. After his first victory, on September 26 in Philadelphia, he purchased many copies of the newspaper to show off in the hotel lobby. He had traveled far from his hometown of Clanton, Alabama. Later that week, on Day 4, he won again.

During his two months with the Atlanta Crackers, the Braves Triple-A team, he made 13 starts and went 3-6 with a 2.42 earned run average. The Milwaukee Braves relocated to Atlanta after the season ended. Carroll was re-admitted to the major leagues in 1966. He stayed for the entire season this time, and it paid off handsomely.

With 73 total appearances, he led the NL and finished with an 8-7 record, 11 saves, and a 2.37 earned run average. “Clay has done a fine job for us,” the team’s new manager, Billy Hitchcock, stated. He’s always willing to help out and get you an excellent job. Carroll, too, retained some of the awe and curiosity he’d had as a child. “Even when he wins a game now, he walks about this high off the ground,” observed his catcher, Joe Torre, stretching out his hand. His friends said, “He’s really on a cloud.”

The 6-foot-3 right-hander generally played at about 200 pounds, but he gained roughly 15 pounds between the 1966 and 1967 seasons, which he subsequently blamed for his bad 1967 season when he was employed in both starting and relieving roles. His record dropped to 6-12, and his ERA skyrocketed to 5.52.

For a short period in July, Carroll was sent to Triple-A Richmond. However, his 0.82 ERA swiftly earned him a promotion to the Atlanta Braves. He protested his demotion at first, threatening to “go into police work.” He persisted with baseball and shed excess pounds by cycling the hills near his house during the offseason. In 1968, he made a comeback weighing 200 pounds.

After spending most of the 1978 season with the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, Carroll, then 37 years old, made two appearances for the big league club before the season’s conclusion. Midway through October, Pittsburgh released him, and by April 15, 1979, he had signed with the Milwaukee Brewers and had made 12 appearances for Triple-A Vancouver before calling it quits.

Carroll’s departure from baseball was marked by tragedy that would haunt him for years. He has three children with his September 1964 bride, Judy Haynes: Brett, Lori, and Connie. They eventually moved to Bradenton, Florida, but split up the same year. Clay wed Frances Nowitzke, a widow with two children of her own, in April 1981. He stayed involved in and close to the lives of his three kids.

On November 16, 1985, his life came crashing down when Frances’s son, Frederick Nowitzke, shot and killed his mother and younger brother, Brett, 11, while wounded Clay in the face. Nowitzke’s odd behavior had been going on for some time, and he came from a family where mental illness ran rampant.

Although his insanity defense was accepted, he was convicted of two murders and attempted murder. A retrial was ordered when the judgment was reversed on appeal due to prosecutorial misconduct. Nowitzke was found guilty again and remained in prison as late as 2012.

After that, Carroll moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he started a new life as a builder. He has appeared at Reds fantasy camps and Hall of Fame ceremonies since his 1980 induction. Carroll entered the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame back in 1992. He was a vital part of the 1970s success of the Reds.
