Cliff Curtis Biography and Career:

Clifford Vivian Devon Curtis is a well-known actor from New Zealand. He was born on July 27, 1968. Once Were Warriors (1994), Three Kings (1999), Training Day (2001), Whale Rider (2002), Collateral Damage (2002), Sunshine, Live Free or Die Hard (both 2007), The Dark Horse (2014), for which he won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actor, Doctor Sleep (2019), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) are some of the films for which he has been credited as an actor.

Curtis has appeared in episodes of the television programs Trauma (NBC), Body of Proof (ABC), and Missing (ABC). On the AMC horror drama series Fear the Walking Dead, he played the role of Travis Manawa from 2015 through 2017; the series aired on AMC.His training in mau rakau, a traditional Maori style of taiaha combat, with the Maori elder Mita Mohi on Mokoia Island helped him develop his skills as a performer in kapa haka later in life. Later on in his life, Curtis became a breakdancer and competed in rock ‘n’ roll dance contests.

Edmund Rice College in Rotorua was where he completed his secondary school. In 1989, Curtis received his Diploma in Acting from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School. Toi Whakaari is also known as the New Zealand Drama School. Before enrolling at the New Zealand Drama School and the Teatro Dimitri Scoula in Switzerland, Curtis began his acting career with community theater performances of the musicals “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Man of La Mancha.” These plays were staged by the Kapiti Players and the Mantis Cooperative Theatre Company, respectively.

Various New Zealand theater organizations employed him, such as Downstage, Mercury Theatre, Bats Theatre, and Centre Point. On stage, he has appeared as several characters in productions such as Happy End, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Othello, The Cherry Orchard, Porgy and Bess, Weeds, Macbeth, Serious Money, and The End of the Golden Weather. His first role in a significant film was a tiny part in the Jane Campion movie The Piano, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Once Were Warriors was one of the most successful films to be shown in New Zealand theaters; the line “Uncle fucken Bully,” which referred to Curtis’s character and was spoken by “Jake the Muss,” played by Temuera Morrison, became one of New Zealand film’s most memorable and quoted lines, as well as being a part of the “Kiwiana” trend. In the AMC television series Fear the Walking Dead, a spin-off of The Walking Dead, Curtis has been cast in the starring male role of Travis Manawa.

In the 2019 film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, he portrayed the role of Jonah Hobbs, the brother of Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson). Both of their characters are Samoans. Teagan Croft and Anna Paquin also feature in the film True Spirit, which Curtis is a part of. On February 3, 2023, it debuted on Netflix throughout the world. The trip of Jessica Watson, an Australian sailor who was 16 years old at the time and trying to sail alone around the world, is the film’s inspiration.
