In addition to his music success, Common has begun a promising acting career, appearing in films including Smokin’ Aces, Street Kings, American Gangster, Wanted, and the forthcoming Terminator Salvation.

The South Side of Chicago is home to Common. A former ABA basketball player turned youth counselor, he is the son of Dr. Mahila Ann Hines and Lonnie Lynn, an educator. When Common’s parents split at the age of six, his father relocated to Denver, Colorado, where he now lives. He eventually joined the Four Corner Hustlers group, which became legendary. However, his dad continued to be involved in Common’s life and even helped secure him a job with the Chicago Bulls throughout his adolescence. It wasn’t until he was a senior at Luther High School South in Chicago that he created a rap trio called CDR, which opened for bands like NWA. When he went to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to pursue business administration, Common departed this group.

After a buddy turned in a recording of Common rapping, he dropped out of Florida A&M University and was featured in The Source magazine’s Unsigned Hype section. In 1992, he released the song “Take It EZ” and followed it up with the album, “Can I Borrow a Dollar?” Omoye Assata Lynn is Common’s daughter (born in 1997). He’s been a member of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, headed by the Rev.

Jeremiah Wright, since he was a kid. In the wake of the controversy surrounding one of Wright’s sermons, Common called out the American media for having “an agenda” in its coverage of the issue. He had a relationship with Erykah Badu between 2000 and 2003. Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson, who both appeared in Smokin’ Aces with Common, have both been linked to him in the past. Common has been linked to Alicia Keys since he appeared in her music videos “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” and “I Want You.” The tennis star Serena Williams has been connected to him recently.

The synergy between Common and J Dilla was forged early on thanks to their shared Great Lakes area roots (Chicago and Detroit, respectively). Slum Village’s Fantastic, Vol. 2, and Common’s Like Water for Chocolate both included the song “Thelonius,” which the two recorded as part of the Soulquarians collaborative. When Dilla’s health started to deteriorate due to the consequences of Lupus Nephritis, he requested Common to move in with him as a roommate in Los Angeles while he sought treatment.

The fact that Dilla asked Common to move in with him while he was dying from a rare ailment is proof to their deep connection that went beyond rap music and the music business. So, Common has become close friends with Maureen Yancey, the mother of J Dilla’s father, J Dilla.

After the release of Resurrection in 1994, Common’s fame grew significantly beyond the confines of Windy City. At the time, it was well-received by alternative and underground hip-hop fans alike and sold well. Almost all of Common’s last album, Resurrection, was produced by his long-time collaborator, No I.D., who was also a mentor to a teenage Kanye West.

For The Gap’s fall 2006 collection, Common posed as a model for images that appeared on posters in shops. The Gap’s “Holiday in Your Hood”-themed Peace Love Gap featured him later in the year. For the promotion of their new Layers fitted cap line, Common formed an agreement with New Era in February 2007. Common also appears in a commercial for the 2008 Lincoln Navigator in which he portrays a little boy. In Streetball mode of NBA 2K7, he makes an appearance. In a commercial for Microsoft’s Zune in the autumn of 2008, Common compared his new song “Universal Mind Control” to Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock.”
