Cormac McCarthy Biography and Career:

Cormac McCarthy was born on July 20, 1933, in Rhode Island. Of his parents, Charles Joseph and Gladys Christina McGrail McCarthy’s six children, he is the third. He changed his name to Cormac in honor of the ancient Irish monarch.

When he was four years old, in 1937, his family relocated to Knoxville so his father could take a position as a lawyer with the Tennessee Valley Authority. From 1967 until his retirement, Charles McCarthy led a legal business in Washington, D.C., after which he and his family relocated from Knoxville.

Cormac grew up in a Roman Catholic household. He graduated from Knoxville’s Catholic High School and enrolled at UT in 1951 and 1952. His academic focus is on the liberal arts. In 1953, McCarthy enlisted in the United States Air Force and spent the next four years there, two spent in Alaska, where he presented a radio program.

McCarthy returned to school in 1957 and ’59, writing under the pen name C. J. McCarthy, Jr. for two tales published in the student literary journal The Phoenix: “A Drowning Event” and “Wake for Susan.” In 1959 and 1960, he was recognized for his creative writing at the university level with the Ingram-Merrill Prize.

Yet in 1967, maybe at Anne’s prompting, the McCarthys moved back to the United States. They settled in Rockford, a little town not far from Knoxville. Anne claims the McCarthys stayed in a leased home. In 1968, Random House released Outer Dark. Like The Orchard Keeper, this novel received glowing reviews.

The Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Writing was established in 1969. At Louisville, Tennessee, he and his wife settled into a barn. McCarthy completely restored the barn by himself. Anne claims that he made a stone chamber with a fireplace among his many additions. He collected all the stones and chopped and dried the wood himself. McCarthy also used bricks from James Agee’s childhood house, which was demolished as part of Knoxville’s downtown urban renewal project, to construct the fireplace in his new home.

The book, “Child of God,” was out in 1973. Based on true occurrences in Sevier County, it was met with praise from some and scorned by others. McCarthy wrote the script for the January 1977 debut of The Gardener’s Son, a PBS film. The events depicted in this script also occurred in real life, but in South Carolina. Later, Ecco Press released an updated edition of the script. After a childless divorce in 1976, Cormac McCarthy relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he remained for many years. Anne DeLisle. A few years later, they got a divorce.

While it was released in 1985, reviewers paid Blood Meridian surprisingly little attention. But now, some see it as a watershed moment in his career. His most recent western, Blood Meridian, has won praise from several reviews. Some believe he has moved too far away from his western background and that his films now seem incomplete. Nonetheless, Blood Meridian is now often considered McCarthy’s best work, followed by Suttree. For the book, McCarthy read widely. To study, the author not only went to all the places he wrote about but also learned Spanish.

In the summer of 1994, Ecco Press released a reworked and updated version of a play by McCarthy in the mid-1970s. The tragedy, The Stonemason, follows a black family through three generations in Kentucky. The Crossing, Knopf’s second book in The Border Trilogy, was published not long after The Stonemason.

The first print run was massive for a work of literary fiction, at 200 thousand copies. The book sold well enough in its first month on the market to warrant a second printing of 25,000 copies. The book tells the story of Billy Parham and his tragic effort to free a trapped she-wolf and restore it to its native habitat in the northern Mexico highlands.

Cities of the Plain, the last installment of The Border Trilogy, was released in 1998. It brings together Billy Parham (from All the Beautiful Horses) and John Grady Cole (from All the Pretty Horses) and focuses on Cole’s fatal love with a Mexican prostitute. Cities of the Plain was not as well-received by reviewers as the other two novels in the Border Trilogy. Still, its epilogue was praised for its callback to Suttree-inspired imagery and the way it recasts the whole Border Trilogy from a fresh and interesting perspective.

McCarthy’s third marriage took place around the time that Cities of the Plain was released, and he and his new wife, Jennifer Winkley, have a son named John Francis, who was born in 1999. Also uprooting from El Paso, the McCarthys have settled in Tesque, New Mexico, a little town near Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Institute has hired McCarthy as a writer-in-residence.

In 2005, Joel and Ethan Coen published No Country for Old Men, which they later turned into an Oscar-winning film. The Pulitzer Prize for Literature was awarded to The Road, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2006. The Road was Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club selection, and McCarthy agreed to an interview with the talk show host. The Road earned the James Tait Black Memorial Award for fiction and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Literature.

2006 saw the debut of Sunset Limited. The Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago commissioned the play, which had its world debut in May and was subsequently published. When Black saves White from committing himself by leaping in front of a subway train, the two men retreat to Black’s rundown tenement flat to discuss “important things” like God, faith, life, and death. The Sunset Limited, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones, was adapted by HBO and was a critical and commercial triumph (directed by Jones).

McCarthy’s original script, The Counselor, was announced in early 2013. The script remains a mystery, but Ridley Scott is at the helm, and the picture is set to open in the United States in October 2013. The plot seems to cover some ground that No Country for Old Men has already covered.
