Dan Gilbert Biography and Career:
On November 5th, 1957, in the United States of America is where well-known social psychologist and novelist Daniel Todd Gilbert was born. In addition to his role as the Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, he is well-known for the research on emotional forecasting that he carried out in collaboration with Professor Timothy Wilson of the University of Virginia. This research was published in the journal Psychological Science. He is the author of the book “Stumbling on Happiness,” which has sold millions of copies across the globe and won the Royal Society Prizes for Science Books in 2007.
The book has been translated into more than 30 different languages. In addition to that, he has written pieces that have been published in a variety of newspapers and journals, hosted a short documentary television series on PBS, and had three talks at TED, all of which were attended by a sizable number of people. When Daniel Gilbert was a child, he was completely fascinated with optical illusions and would read whatever material he could get his hands on related to the topic. He was astounded at the simplicity with which the human mind and sight might be deceived.
When Gilbert was 19 years old, he decided not to continue his education and instead focused on achieving his ambition of being a science fiction writer. Both of these degrees were in the field of psychology. Beginning in 1985 and continuing all the way through 1996, he was a professor at the University of Texas in Austin for a total of 13 years. Since the year 1996, he has been teaching at Harvard University as a member of the university’s faculty. He and his wife, Marilynn Oliphant, live together at their house in Cambridge, which is located in the state of Massachusetts.

Gilbert made an appearance in the very first of a series of television advertisements for Prudential Financial that began airing in 2013. These advertisements, which used data visualization as a means of persuading Americans of the necessity of setting aside money for their retirement, began airing in 2013.
For example, in one ad, viewers were asked to put stickers on a timeline to indicate the age of the person they knew who was the oldest. In a separate demonstration, Gilbert exploited the power of compound interest to start a chain reaction and break a Guinness World Record by toppling a domino that was nine meters long and thirty feet tall.
The domino was made of nine meters of wood and had thirty feet of wood stacked on top of it. The participants in this exercise put magnets to the walls that had the words “Past” and “Future” printed on them as a third technique to illustrate the optimism bias. The Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize and a professorship at Harvard College are just two of the many honors and distinctions that have been bestowed upon Gilbert as a result of the extraordinary quality of his classroom instruction.
In addition, he has been presented with a number of awards and honors in recognition of his research, the most notable of which is the Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology, which was granted to him by the American Psychological Association. 2008 was the year that he was officially inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences after being chosen for membership.
