Daniel Johns Biography and Career:

By the time he turned 18 in 1997, Daniel Johns of Silverchair had already established himself as a renowned rock star for a period of three years. In the following excerpt from his biography The Book of Daniel, Jeff Apter explains that behind the scenes, while his band was riding high on the success of their second album, Freak Show, Johns was slipping back into the depression he had begun battling the previous year. This takes place while Johns’ band was flying high with the success of their second album. His physique gave the impression that he had endured yet another fight.

In April, The Sydney Morning published an article written by Bernard Zuel of the Herald that said, “Johns is skinny to the point of thin,” adding that “His slacks and shirt falling freely off him.” The shifts in Johns’ writing were noted by other authors. He also has his fingernails painted with nail varnish that is half ripped off.” Another person said that Johns seemed to be in a “dangerous state of emaciation.”

“Johns was slipping into another period of depression as he felt as though his life was out of his control. He was frustrated by the demands that his stardom was placing on his family, and he felt as though his life was out of his control. This depression manifested itself in his sunken features and rake-thin physique. It was almost as though he was attempting to fade completely from sight.”

By the end of 1997, Johns had moved out of his childhood home and into a property with two bedrooms that was located close to Merewether Beach in Newcastle. As a result, he felt more and more alienated. In spite of the fact that his parents were successful in persuading him to see a psychologist, he stopped going to sessions after just two months. At this point, he was also suffering from panic attacks and paranoia. After that, he decided to quit eating.

“Johns reasoned that the one aspect of his life over which he had complete control was the food that he consumed. It was his method of taming “the turmoil I was experiencing within,” and he did it to himself. He began to put his body to the test in an effort to determine how little food he could consume while still maintaining his health. Johns saw it as a peculiar opportunity for a personal challenge. In the end, he was forced to subsist on little more than a few pieces of fruit each day, along with perhaps some soup; he would consume whatever it needed to prevent him from passing out.

After the event, Johns said, “The only way I can express it is to say that it felt comfortable to be in charge of something like I hadn’t fully lost it.” The issue is that you believe you are getting control over something, but in fact, you are losing control over how your body functions. This is a problem because you think you are gaining control over something.

Within a few short months, I had reached the point where the only thing keeping me from collapsing was eating. My parents, along with my brother and sister, were the only ones I trusted and could see without experiencing any unease during that time period. Of course, they were all freaking out about me, but I couldn’t really tell how awful it was since I couldn’t really see how horrible it was.

Johns was in such a state of confusion that he really came to the conclusion that “every chef in the world intended to poison me” and that even something as innocuous as an apple held concealed razor blades. He would glance in the mirror and see the stunning physical changes that he was enduring, but then he would shrug and think that somehow his clothing had gotten larger since he had last worn them. He believed that this was the explanation for the changes in his appearance.

In the middle of all of this insanity, Johns discovered that he was unable to shake a cold, which should not have come as a surprise considering his diet. He went to see his primary care physician, who told him in no uncertain terms to forget about the cold because, if he didn’t start eating, he was going to die.

He had done a significant amount of harm to his immune system. Johns’ deterioration was aggravated by the fact that he was a vegan and suffered from paranoid delusions, believing that his food had been poisoned. His weight was now much lower than 50 kg. He had very little flesh on his bones at this point. His eyes were empty and rimmed with darkness, and his hair was wild.”

Johns came to the realization that he need assistance when his doctor pointed out to him that he was displaying the physical indicators of an advanced eating issue. He moved home with his parents again and started taking medicines for his depression.

He was able to recuperate, but in 2002 he had a new health crisis when he started to suffer from weariness and knee discomfort. This time he was hospitalized. When he was first diagnosed with chronic reactive arthritis, singer Natalie Imbruglia, with whom he is now in a relationship, provided him with nursing assistance.

The band was in Chicago on March 15 when it was announced that their new album, Neon Ballroom, had landed at number one on the Australian album chart, echoing the overwhelming success of their previous albums, Frogstomp and Freak Show. After then, it went on to sell a total of 204 000 copies domestically. One week later, the album debuted on the charts in the United States at position number fifty.

By the first week of April, it had already been awarded the gold certification, which indicates that it had sold at least 500,000 copies, and it would go on to spend 30 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 list. The album had the greatest chart début of the band’s career in Europe, where it debuted at number twenty-nine in the UK, number thirteen in Germany, and number twenty-three in France. The album’s chart debut in Canada was at number five, while its debut on the charts in Europe was at number five.

Neon Ballroom eventually reached sales in the United States that were comparable to those of Freak Show over time (633,000 to Freak Show’s 620,000), but they were not even close to Frogstomp’s two million or more. Despite this, there was a rise in sales of Silverchair’s third album in other territories. In Germany, it sold 101,000 copies, while in Brazil it sold 116,000 copies, and in Sweden, it sold 25,000 copies.

On May 10, when Ana’s Song (Open Fire) made its debut on the Australian singles chart at number fourteen, it became the band’s eleventh straight song to debut in the top 40 of the Australian singles chart. Even surpassing Savage Garden in terms of commercial success, Silverchair dominated the Australian music charts during the whole decade of the 1990s.

Even though the band was performing at lesser venues in North America than they did in 1997, they continued to see regular levels of financial success from their live gigs. They played a string of concerts in March and were able to sell out the Roxy Theater in Atlanta, which had a capacity of 1,500, and the Vic in Chicago, which had a capacity of 1,400.

In Canada, where they were joined by fellow Australians Grinspoon, they sold out venues with capacities of up to 2500 people, such as The Warehouse in Toronto, and 1200 people, such as Le Spectrum in Montreal.

Rock plodders Nickelback were the opening act for Silverchair at their next show, which took place on March 26 at the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver. This was another example of Silverchair picking a support act that would soon become very popular; Matchbox Twenty had become very popular since Silverchair’s last tour of the United States.

Some of their performances were not as well attended as others; in Columbus, Ohio, there were only 800 people in attendance, while the 2460-person capacity Boathouse in Norfolk, Virginia, was not even half filled when Silverchair played there on June 2.

Even yet, Silverchair resumed their tour, and Johns maintained his habit of acting in ways that were sometimes funny and other times odd. It seemed as if he had gone on beyond his following, who continued to want earlier songs like “Tomorrow” and “Pure Massacre.”

At other times, it was quite obvious that he was playing up his position as a frontman: after all, why not give the fans some razzle-dazzle to go along with the rock? On May 2nd, in Tampa, Florida, Johns donned his rock-and-roll evangelist avatar in front of an audience. He asked the others in the audience, “Can I have a hallelujah?” “Let’s hear it for Jesus!” he cried. “Let’s hear it for Jesus!” “Let’s hear it for that old devil, Satan! Let’s give everything up for sex, drugs, and rock and roll that gets you fucked up!
