Dionne Warwick Biography and Career:

On December 12th, 1940, American music legend, actress, and TV host Marie Dionne Warwick entered the world. In 1963, the Gospelaires provided backup vocals for Doris “Rikii” Troy’s smash hit “Just One Look,” which featured guest vocals from Judy Clay, Cissy Houston, and the Gospelaires. After a change of personnel, the Gospelaires reemerged as the recording group Sweet Inspirations, who had moderate success on the charts and were in high demand as studio background singers.

The Gospelaires and their successors, the Sweet Inspirations, provided backing vocals on a number of records recorded in New York City for artists such Garnet Mimms, the Drifters, Jerry Butler, Solomon Burke, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, and Elvis Presley. Warwick reflected on this in their 2002 biography “A man dashed in hastily from the Apollo’s backstage to ask for backup singers for an upcoming session with Sam “the Man” Taylor. Both “It’s Love That Really Counts” and “Makes It Easy on Yourself” were included in their demo forms.

In response to their backstage banter, the trio was asked to provide background vocals for a number of New York recording sessions. The group became in-demand in New York’s music scene because to its backing work for a wide variety of artists, including the Drifters, Ben E. King, Chuck Jackson, Dinah Washington, Ronnie “the Hawk” Hawkins, and Solomon Burke.
