Dustin Hoffman Biography and Career:

American actor Dustin Lee Hoffman. He has done work in theatre, film, and television. Working in low-budget Off-Broadways in New York, Hoffman endured much hardship throughout his life and admitted to having lived below the American poverty line until the age of 31. In the film The Graduate, he played a naive and bewildered young man, which shifted his career trajectory. Before ‘The Graduate,’ Hoffman had a hard time securing leading roles in Hollywood, but the success of the picture changed all that. After the movie came out, he received high marks for his performance.

He gained widespread attention and soon found himself co-starring with Hollywood heavyweights such as Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Gene Hackman, etc. The other two Oscar-winning films in which Hoffman appeared are Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man. He is well-known for his stage work in addition to his film roles. His voice acting in “Kung Fu Panda” earned him praise, and he has also done work for television movies.

Actor Dustin Hoffman was born to Lillian and Harry Hoffman on August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, USA. His father worked as a prop supervisor at “Columbia Pictures” and also sold furniture. He came from a secular, non-observant Jewish home.

Hoffman graduated from “Los Angeles High School” and continued his medical education at “Santa Monica College.” After reconsidering, he enrolled in the “Pasadena Playhouse” to study acting. Hoffman met Gene Hackman, an actor who was having trouble finding work, at the “Pasadena Playhouse.” Both of them ended up in New York, where Hoffman was hampered by his “unconventional” appearance and subsequently found few acting roles.

Hoffman was able to act in Off-Broadway shows throughout the 1960s. Concurrently, he attended ‘Actors Studio’ to learn the techniques of method acting.

His debut cinematic role was in the 1967 release The Tiger Makes Out. Then, he got $1000 from the “Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre” for directing “Two for the Seesaw” and “The Time of Your Life.”

The director Mike Nichols chose him to play the main character in his film The Graduate (1967). After only three years of release, the film has already earned over $100 million worldwide on a budget of just $3 million. He rose to fame thanks to his exceptional acting abilities and his striking appearance. An “Academy Award” nomination was also bestowed upon him for his work.

Hoffman returned to Broadway in 1968 to perform in “Jimmy Shine,” despite offers he was receiving from Hollywood. His performance was so well regarded that he was honored with a “Drama Desk Award.”

It was in 1969 that the American drama ‘Midnight Cowboy,’ starring Hoffman and Jon Voight, was released. The film took home three “Academy Awards,” while Hoffman was nominated for one again.

In 1970, he had another successful film with Little Big Man. In retrospect, the picture seems more anti-establishment than anything else, but at the time, it was viewed as a radical departure from the norm. Reviews for the film were mostly positive.

All the President’s Men and Marathon Man were two of the blockbuster films he starred in that year. These films solidified his reputation as a seasoned performer. He went on to star in films including 1978’s “Straight Time” and 1990’s “Agatha” (1979). In 1979, with the release of ‘Kramer vs. Kramer,’ Hoffman became a major star in Hollywood. His first “Academy Award” was given to him for his portrayal of a busy parent.

An adaptation of “Death of a Salesman” was shown on television in 1985. For Hoffman, the experience proved to be invaluable. He received numerous accolades for his performance in the film and was even awarded an Emmy and a Golden Globe for it.

The 1987 comedy film he was in, “Ishtar,” was a major misstep in Hoffman’s otherwise stellar filmography. Warren Beatty co-starred with him in the film. Despite its failure, “Ishtar” gained cult status.

In the 1988 film “Rain Man,” Hoffman won praise for his performance as an autistic savant. After around two years of rehearsal, he was rewarded with his second “Oscar” for his portrayal of the part.

The next year saw the release of “Family Business,” in which Hoffman played Sean Connery and Matthew Broderick. Critics hated the film, yet it was a hit with those who rented it.

This was a banner year for Hoffman, since he also co-starred in the John Travolta vehicle “Mad City” and the Robert De Niro vehicle “Wag the Dog,” both black comedies. The nomination for ‘Wag the Dog’ was his sixth Academy Award nomination overall. He co-starred in the comedy-drama fantasy film “Stranger Than Fiction” (2006), opposite Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal. That same year, he also portrayed a murderer in “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.”

In 2007, he did an ad campaign for Telstra’s ‘Next G’ network in Australia and later starred in 50 Cent’s ‘Follow My Lead’ music video as a doctor.

In the 2008 animated feature Kung Fu Panda, he provided the voice of the character “Master Shifu.” He reportedly wasn’t enthusiastic about doing the voice work at first. The Annie Award for “Voice Acting in an Animated Feature” went to him unexpectedly.

He returned to the character of “Shifu” in the 2011 box office smash “Kung Fu Panda 2.” Parallel to this, he oversaw the production of “Quartet,” a BBC Films comedy starring Maggie Smith. He then recorded “Being There” for Audible.com the following year.

He co-starred with Jon Favreau in the smash hit film “Chef” in 2014. After that, he became a leading man in films like “Boychoir” and “The Cobbler.” He received a “International Emmy Award” for “Best Actor” the following year for his role as a co-star alongside Judi Dench in the TV movie “Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot.”
