Elif Shafak Biography and Career:

Elif Shafak, PhD. is a distinguished British-Turkish author and public speaker. She has written 19 books, 12 of which are novels, and publishes in both Turkish and English. Her books have sold millions of copies throughout the globe, and they have been translated into 55 other tongues.

The 2019 edition of her work 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World was selected as Blackwell’s Book of the Year and was a Booker Prize and RSL Ondaatje Prize shortlist pick. The BBC included her work The Forty Rules of Love in their list of 100 Novels That Changed the World. Published in August of 2021, her most recent novel is titled The Island of Missing Trees.

The Turkish-American author and professor Shafak is an honorary fellow at Oxford University and possesses a doctorate in political science from St. Anne’s College. I talked to Elif about her work and her views on the power of literature to affect social change.

I’m curious as to how you first encountered literature. By [Elif Shafak] I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid. The first short stories I wrote were when I was around age 8. But it wasn’t because I hoped to one day write novels. Seriously, I had no idea that was even a possibility! No one close to me had ever had their work published, so I had no examples to follow. Thus, it was similar to groping about in the dark, following an intuition without fully understanding its motivation. My need for literature predates my awareness of my own mortality and persists to this day.

As a young youngster growing up in a very devout section of Ankara, Turkey’s capital, I found life to be somewhat dull. I was an only child with few extended family members and was forbidden from playing outside following an episode of sexual assault in the area. Those boring afternoons are seared into my mind forever. I was on a quest to discover the entrance to a fantastical world called Storyland. My entry point has always been reading and tales.

Thus, I believe it is accurate to state that my loneliness inspired me to start writing fiction. I was reared by my single working mother, a rarity in 1960s Turkey. To the age of ten, I lived with my grandmother, who was a remarkable, vibrant, and caring individual. Magic, superstition, herbs, evil eye beads, and coffee mugs hung from the ceiling in Grandma’s home because she was a healer. Each of them would fill me with awe, and I would watch them intently. By her example, we can see the impact of well-chosen words.

Two things stand out to me when I reflect on my own writing development. In the first place, I’ve always loved reading, and I’ve read plenty of books from both the East and the West. Second, I’ve spent far too much of my life feeling like an outsider. I felt out of place even in my native country. Not once have I.

This is due in no small part to the fact that I started life in the French city of Strasbourg. My dad stayed in France after my parents divorced and started a new family there. My mother, in the meantime, took me to Turkey. So, I was raised by two moms and no dad. Likewise, it was a bit out of the ordinary.

Without a doubt, my mom considered Turkey to be our home and motherland. It was like discovering a whole new country for the first time. Thus, we found ourselves in Ankara at Grandma’s house, a conservative, patriarchal, and inward-looking establishment. Being here made me feel like a stranger, someone desperately clinging to the fringes of society while desperately trying to absorb its customs through careful observation.

When I was around 10 years old, my mother began working as a diplomat, and we began frequenting far-flung locations like Spain, Jordan, and Germany. I attended schools abroad where I was exposed to foreign languages.

I moved to Istanbul on my own when I was in my early twenties because I felt the city was calling me and because I thought it would be the best place for me to write and publish my books. But Istanbul, which I believe to be a She-City, was a fickle girlfriend.

I spent many years in New York City, where I wrote and published, before settling in Boston, Michigan, and finally Tucson, Arizona. After spending some time back in Istanbul out of nostalgia, I ultimately decided to make London my permanent residence. I have a hard time putting into words why I feel like I’m permanently on the run, but that’s just how I am.

This nomadic way of life persisted throughout history. To put it simply, I am a wanderer on many levels. In James Baldwin’s words, a “commuter.” The literature I read helped me maintain a sense of wholeness and unity. When I didn’t feel like I belonged, it helped me make friends and feel less alone. Because of this personal experience, I am completely sincere when I proclaim that books have the power to rescue their readers.
