Howard Schultz Biography and Career:

American businessman Howard D. Schultz was born on July 19, 1953. He was the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Starbucks Coffee Company from 1986 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2017. In 1982, Schultz started working at Starbucks. Later, he left and opened Il Giornale, a specialty coffee shop. At the end of the 1980s, Il Giornale was bought by Starbucks. Under Schultz, the company opened a lot of stores, which changed the way people in Seattle, the U. S., and other places think about coffee.

Starbucks became the biggest chain of coffee shops in the world after making big deals with distributors. Schultz took the company public in 1992 and used the $271 million valuation to open twice as many stores in a well-known series of “coffee wars.” He quit as CEO in 2000, and Orin Smith took over. Schultz became CEO again in 2008 when the economy was in trouble. After Schultz took over from Jim Donald, he fired a lot of managers and workers and closed a lot of stores.

He helped many American and Chinese beverage companies buy each other, started a national loyalty program, and made sure that fair trade rules were followed. People say that his fast growth in the Chinese market brought together the tea and coffee-drinking cultures of the country. Schultz was CEO until April 2017, when Kevin Johnson took over. In June 2018, Myron Ullman became chairman. Schultz has written four books about business.

He is a politically moderate person who isn’t afraid to say what he thinks. Schultz thought about running for president as an independent candidate in 2012, 2016, and 2020. He didn’t enter any of the three contests. He has moderate views on finances and liberal views on social issues when it comes to domestic politics. People call him a “liberal hawk” because he backs neoliberalism and wants the United States to lead in international affairs.

Forbes says that Schultz is the 680th richest person in the United States. He has a net worth of $4.0 billion (April 2020). Schultz set up the Schultz Family Foundation to help people who had served in the military and to fight against youth unemployment. Howard D. Schultz was born to Jewish parents, Fred and Elain Schultz, on July 19, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. A big truck was what Fred Schultz drove. Howard is one of his parents’ two kids. Schultz lived in public housing in Canarsie when he was a kid. Schultz says that he came from a poor family.

Schultz went to and graduated from Canarsie High School in 1971. He went to Northern Michigan University (NMU) from 1971 to 1975 and got a Bachelor of Arts in communications. Schultz worked at a ski lodge in Michigan for a year after he graduated from college. Then, he went to work for Xerox in New York City as a salesman. In 1979, he was hired by the Swedish company PAI Partners to be the general manager of its U.S. branch, Hammarplast. When Schultz worked at Hammarplast, he was in charge of the company’s U. S. business.

In 1981, he went to Seattle, Washington, to the Starbucks Coffee Company to fill orders for plastic cone filters. Schultz started working at Starbucks when he was 29 years old, in 1982. He was hired to be the director of marketing and retail operations. Schultz tried coffee for the first time while shopping in Milan, Italy, in 1983. When he got back to the company, he tried to get Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker to sell traditional espresso drinks in addition to whole-bean coffee, leaf teas, and spices.

Baldwin and Bowker were interested in the cafe idea after a test run went well. But they decided not to use Schultz’s idea because espresso machines are expensive, not many people in America know how to fix them, and most Americans don’t drink espresso. Schultz left Starbucks to start a business of his own. Schultz left Starbucks in 1985 to start his own store. He had to have $400,000 in cash to start his business. In Milan, Schultz went to more than 500 coffee shops. He took on most of the risk of bringing espresso to the U. S. market, so Starbucks put $150,000 into the new business and gave Baldwin a seat on its board. Bowker also helped in a less official way.

Ron Margolis, a doctor in the area, has given another $100,000. Schultz asked 242 investors to back his idea, but 217 of them said no. By 1986, he had saved enough money to open his first store, which he called Il Giornale after a newspaper in Milan with the same name. There were a few seats in the store, and opera music was playing in the background. It sold ice cream as well.

Schultz changed Il Giornale’s name to Starbucks and started opening stores all over the United States. Customers and competitors had mixed feelings about this kind of marketing strategy. Independent coffeehouse chains had tense relationships with the company, but some owners said that Starbucks had helped their customers learn more about coffee.

Schultz didn’t like the idea of franchises, so he made sure that every Starbucks store in the United States was still owned by Starbucks. Schultz’s decision to make Starbucks a place where people can meet is seen by many as the start of the second wave of coffee culture in the United States, especially in Seattle. On June 26, 1992, Starbucks had its first public offering (IPO), and its common stock started trading under the ticker symbol SBUX.
