Idina Menzel Biography and Career:

Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, whose bright, commanding soprano voice is known around the world for the Oscar-winning song “Let It Go,” made her screen debut in the film adaptation of Rent (2005) and has since appeared in the TV series Glee (2010-2013), the Disney animated films Frozen (2013) and Frozen II (2019), and the film Uncut Gems (2019). She has had a solo recording career as a singer-songwriter, with albums including Holiday Wishes (2014) and Idina (2016) cracking the Top 30. Her work straddles the genres of adult alternative, vocal, and current pop. Drama Queen, her seventh studio album, was released in 2023.

At the age of eight, the Syosset, New York-born Menzel began taking vocal lessons, and by high school, she was earning money singing at weddings and bar mitzvahs. She continued her education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a B.F.A. in Drama in 1993. In 1995, she landed her first professional theatrical role when she was cast as Maureen in the rock musical Rent.

The musical, based on Puccini’s opera La Bohème but set in 1990s New York City’s East Village, debuted on Broadway in April 1996 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In the category of Featured Actress, Menzel was up for a Tony Award nomination. After recording her debut solo album in July 1997, she departed from the Rent cast. Still, I Can’t Be Still, published by Hollywood Records in 1998, is a collection of original adult alternative songs co-written with bassist Milton Davis.

While performing off-Broadway, Menzel made her cinematic debut in 2001’s Kissing Jessica Stein. She subsequently became Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked, starring opposite Kristen Chenoweth’s Glinda. Ten Tony Awards were up for grabs after Wicked’s October 2003 debut at the Gershwin Theatre, and in 2004, Idina Menzel took home the trophy for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Her sophomore effort, an EP titled Here, was published independently the following year.

In 2005, Menzel made an off-Broadway appearance in the Michael John LaChiusa musical See What I Want to See. In 2006, she returned to the role of Elphaba for the West End debut of Wicked at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre. She made her big screen debut the following year as Nancy Tremaine in the Disney real action/animated Enchanted, and her first club smash was a dance cover of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. Her second solo album, I Stand, was published in 2008 by Warner Bros.

The same year, she shared the stage with Josh Groban, Adam Pascal from Rent, and others for Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ Chess in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2009, Reprise released an album featuring the cast. In 2010, Menzel released a “Menzel” EP with studio and live tracks. She first appeared as Shelby Corcoran on Glee in 2010, and her appearances have continued to this day.

Live: Barefoot at the Symphony, Menzel’s PBS show from 2011, features the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony under Marvin Hamlisch. Concord Records broadcast in 2012 and later released it on CD and DVD. Meanwhile, Menzel provided her vocal talents to the Disney animated musical film Frozen as the character Elsa.

After its late 2013 release, the film was an instant success worldwide. Featuring vocals by Menzel, the soaring “Let It Go” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Academy Awards and the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media were presented to it after that.

Menzel released a holiday CD titled Holiday Wishes after her winter-themed feature musical. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in October 2014, becoming her first Top 50 solo album and eventually peaking at position six on the Billboard 200. She subsequently made her Broadway debut in the central role of If/hereafter, a musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey about a divorcee who relocates to New York City. This is another Tony Award nomination for Menzel for Best Actress in a Musical.

Menzel, who reprised her role as Elsa in the 2015 short Frozen Fever, recorded her third studio album of original songs, titled Idina while continuing to represent Elsa in Disney shorts. Upon its 2016 debut, it quickly rose to the top 30 on the Billboard 200. In 2017, she and Nia Long starred in a retelling of Beaches on Lifetime TV.

After the film premiered, Warner released a soundtrack that showcased Menzel’s vocals. In 2018, Arts Music released a live album by Idina. The following year, she not only co-starred in the highly acclaimed film Uncut Gems but also released her second holiday-themed album, Christmas: A Season of Love, which charted on the Billboard 200 and included guest appearances from Billy Porter, Josh Gad, Ariana Grande, and others.

In 2021, she collaborated with Porter and Camila Cabello on a live-action Cinderella film that included her Oscar-nominated original song “Dream Girl.” In 2022, she reprised her role in the Disney fantasy film Disenchanted. With the release of her seventh studio album, Drama Queen, in 2023, Menzel made her solo comeback with the singles “Move” and “Beast.”
