Jackie Hill Perry Biography and Career:

Jackie Hill Perry is an American poet, author, and hip-hop musician. She first gained notoriety for her readings of spoken word pieces at the Passion 4 Christ Movement, including “My Life as a Stud,” “A Poem About Weed,” and “Jig-a-Boo”. She has written on the subject of Christianity and homosexuality for a number of Christian ministry publications, including The Resurgence and John Piper’s Desiring God.

She joined the Christian hip-hop label Humble Beast in Portland, Oregon, in January 2014, and on November 4, 2014, she published her debut album, which was freely and commercially available. In March 2014, Hill wed Preston Perry, another spoken word performer; the pair currently has four kids. On June 21, 1989, in St. Louis, Jackie Hill became Jackie Hill Perry.

She was sexually abused when she was five years old and was raised without a father in her family. Hill went to church every Sunday until she was ten. She claimed that her struggles with gender confusion were exacerbated by the sexual assault she experienced, bullying at school, and boys’ lack of interest in her. Hill began copying male traits at age six, such as standing up to use the bathroom, because she believed she should have been born a boy from the age of four. She began pursuing many serial relationships with different women when she was 17 years old.  Hill’s second partner recommended that she take on a male role in a lesbian relationship and become a “stud.”

Hill claimed that when she adopted the stud persona, “it felt like every girl wanted me. I would go in straight bars and have girls throwing themselves at me. I was never the ‘cute chick,’ but when I became a stud, it seemed like every girl wanted me. That was like a drug to me since I’m a girl who needs to be loved and is insecure. According to Hill’s account in the poem “My Life as a Stud,” “one day, the Lord spoke to me. She will be your demise, he declared. The verse that states that death is the price of sin finally made sense in that instant.

Hill broke up with her girlfriend, went back to church, and began to compose poems. She met Preston Perry, the man she would wed while performing her first spoken word piece at a P4CM poetry conference in 2010. Preston proposed to Hill in August 2013 using the spoken word poetry “The Covenant,” as Hill had begun to lose interest in women. The union took place in March 2014. Hill Perry credits God with transforming her life in order for her sexuality to shift. Jackie Hill Perry claims to have been a lesbian in the past and that one of the things God brought about in her life was her conversion to heterosexuality. Hill Perry spoke out against the Macklemore song “Same Love” in an interview with Christian hip-hop radio station Wade-O Radio on July 31, 2013.

She added that “The word of God itself, separate from Jackie Hill, confirms that people may change. Therefore, if the Bible is indeed the inspired word of God, we must accept that fact and hold that fact to be true. If we think that God can’t transform people, I think we’ve reduced him significantly. How can he not just adjust my wants if he can create the moon, stars, and a galaxy that we still don’t fully understand?”  Many people have challenged this position, especially homosexual rights campaigners.

Hill Perry’s experience “runs counter to pronouncements by gay rights groups that exclaim sexuality as an inherent, immutable characteristic,” according to The Washington Times, and it also coincides with “wide-ranging reports about the psychological dangers of so-called “reparative therapy,” which aims to change the orientation of homosexuals.” According to Hill Perry, around 40% of the remarks she has received on social media are unfavorable.

One critic said that Hill and Preston Perry were both gay and that they got married to “play God to a bunch of uneducated people” when they wed in March 2014. Hill Perry named Propaganda, Mali Music, and Ebony Moore as “a few people who encourage me to be outstanding at my trade” in an interview with The Gospel Coalition. She credits John Piper, a preacher, as a key theological inspiration and even based her book Art of Joy on Piper’s book Desiring God, in which he describes his view of Christian hedonism. Hill Perry asserts

It’s a notion that, aside from the doctrines of grace, has completely changed how I think about my faith and sin. Now, when I consider some sins, I don’t just commit them because I want to. No, why do you believe I will be satisfied by this sin when only God can? It deepens the way I think about my problems and has changed the way I see God.

Hill Perry, however, made it clear that she does not think that every Christian with a gay propensity will abandon those urges in a 2013 interview with Wade-O Radio. “God has promised to send me his Holy Spirit, who will aid me in escaping my desires if he decides not to alter them. Some persons who had been alcoholics for 20 years have now completed rehab and stopped drinking, but they may occasionally be tested. They have a choice, but if they see a bottle of alcohol, they will desire that whiskey.

On January 7, 2014, the record label Humble Beast made the announcement that it has signed Hill Perry as an artist. She has contributed as a guest artist to a number of Christian hip-hop albums, including Instruments of Mercy by Beautiful Eulogy and Because You Asked by Swoope. Beautiful Eulogy was the producer of her debut album, The Art of Joy, which was released on November 4, 2014.

Hill Perry works for the Legacy Movement ministry as well.  Hill Perry, J. Givens, and John Givez appeared on Lecrae’s “Misconceptions 3” off the Church Clothes 3 album in 2016.  The “Poets in Autumn” tour, features Christian spoken word artists including Ezekiel Azonwu, Chris Webb, Joseph Solomon, and Janette…IKZ includes Hill Perry and her husband. They produce group and solo works that deal with issues related to the Christian religion.  The Perrys is a podcast that Hill Perry and her husband launched in 2019. They provide perspectives on parenting, theology, politics, racism, and interpersonal relationships.

Hill Perry took drugs excessively and developed a pornography addiction. She made the switch to Christianity in October 2008. Jackie Hill Perry struggled with gender identity uncertainty as she grew up due to a childhood experience with sexual abuse, and at the age of seventeen, she realized she was a lesbian. Before she became a Christian in 2008, she led a promiscuous sexual life and battled an addiction to drugs and pornography. Her claim to have been a former lesbian has caused controversy, with many gay rights activists arguing that Jackie Hill Perry’s experience supports the theory of conversion therapy despite the fact that sexual orientation cannot be changed.
