Jad Abumrad Biography and Career:

Jad Nicholas Abumrad, known for his work as a musician, record producer, and radio presenter, was born in the United States. He was one of the original hosts of the renowned public radio show Radiolab, which he co-created and still hosts alongside Latif Nasser and Lulu Miller.

His mother was a scientist, and his father was a physician; Abumrad grew up in Tennessee with both parents. His father, Naji Abumrad, was born and raised in Lebanon but is now employed at the Medical Centre at Vanderbilt University.

At Oberlin College, where he studied creative writing and music composition, focusing on electronic and electroacoustic music, Abumrad earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995. His areas of concentration were electronic and electroacoustic music.

In college, he became acquainted with the woman who would become his wife, Karla Murthy; they were married in 2007. Murthy works as a producer for a television program. They are a couple living in Brooklyn with two children and a house in Fort Greene. Before Abumrad decided to pursue a radio career, he was active in the film industry as a composer.

Abumrad uses his background as both a musician and a journalist to produce what has been labeled “a new aesthetic” in television reporting. He creates engaging videos that enable spectators to dig into studies of complicated issues such as the origins of numbers, the history of compassion, and the grounds for the war on terror by deftly weaving together narrative, music, interviews, and sound effects.

More Perfect, Jad’s podcast, which he created and delivered for three seasons, was hailed by The New York Times as “…possibly the most mesmerizing podcast.” And in 2019, Jad Abumrad (with Shima Oliaee of Osm Audio) produced Dolly Parton’s America. This 9-part series won the Peabody Award and analyzed a divided America through the perspective of one of its most famous musical icons.

The series was titled Dolly Parton’s America and was created by Jad Abumrad and Shima Oliaee. Jad started working at Vanderbilt University in two capacities in April of 2022: he became a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts in the College of Arts and Science. He joined the Communications and Marketing Advisory Board.

Since the show’s inception in 2002, Abumrad has served as a co-host on Radiolab and a producer for the program. Radiolab now has a distinct sound due to his previous involvement in the music industry. On the album is a remix that Abumrad did of “In C” by Terry Riley. The remix was featured on Radiolab on December 14, 2009, in C.

The MacArthur Foundation named Abumrad a Fellow in 2011 in recognition of his “engaging audio explorations of scientific and philosophical questions” that “captivate listeners and bring to broadcast journalism a distinctive new aesthetic” and because “his background as a composer enables him to orchestrate dialogue, music, and sound effects into compelling documentaries that draw listeners into investigations of otherwise intimidating topics.”

In addition, Abumrad was the host and producer of the documentary “The Ring & I,” which investigated Wagner’s Ring Cycle and its ongoing appeal. It received ten awards, including the Grand Award in Radio from the National Headliner Association in 2005. It was played on radio stations all around the nation and all over the globe.

The first Radiolab spin-off series was called More Perfect, and it was developed by Jad in 2016. It is a podcast that delves into the background of the Supreme Court cases that have become the most well-known.

In 2018, Abumrad released a four-part audio series titled “UnErased,” which documents the stories of individuals who survived the effects of gay conversion therapy. Kat Aaron and Shima Oliaee, working on the film Boy Erased, contributed to the podcast together.

In 2019, the first episode of Dolly Parton’s America, a podcast hosted by Abumrad and consisting of nine parts and focusing on Parton’s life, career, and continued appeal, was released. Abumrad and the show’s producer, Shima Oliaee, had a lengthy conversation with Parton for the episode.

In addition to his ties in journalism, Jad’s father, Naji, is connected with Parton since he provided medical care to her when she was injured in a car accident as a young adult. The program was awarded seven national accolades, one of which was the highly regarded George Foster Peabody Award.

In January 2022, Abumrad announced be leaving Radiolab. A month later, producers Lulu Miller and Latif Nasser took over the operations program operation 2022; Abumrad began his career as a professor at Vanderbilt. This thinks organization in New York has elected him to the position of Fellow.
