Due to the fact that I have worked in radio for the last 16 years, this competition is fair. A reputation is perhaps the best word to use to describe what others think of me. Anyone who calls me must be absolutely convinced that they are going to be able to get the best of me because the videos that go viral are seen by millions upon millions of people.
There are times when you get the impression that someone could be fragile. When this happens, you take your foot off the pedal since there is no satisfaction to be had by intellectually trouncing someone who sounds a little ill. I have to cut you off because you are not allowed to make false statements while you are on the air.
I’m not interested in opinions unless they’re based on facts, but unfortunately, a lot of places in the media, particularly when it comes to politicians, will let people say things that aren’t true and won’t challenge them when they do so. How often do you believe you are able to influence the opinions of others?
Not as regularly as I’d want. A gentleman who was a fully signed-up member of the EDL before he began listening to my program came up to me at a festival of discussion a few weeks ago and said, “I believe you saved my life.” There were perhaps 600 individuals in attendance at the event. Those times are quite significant to me, but you’re taking things to an extreme. I don’t consider myself conceited or stupid enough to believe that I’m making a significant contribution to the national discussion in any way, shape, or form.
Is it reasonable for others to assume that you have a superior attitude if the title of your book is How to Be Right?
I believe that those who make their life by spreading falsehoods refer to those who speak the truth as arrogant. I am not arrogant; being arrogant would imply that I am enjoying this.
The racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic viewpoints that you meet on your program are deconstructed in your book. But have you observed a significant increase in antagonism or a shift in views in your day-to-day life?
I am a white heterosexual guy, and despite the fact that many people are now debating this topic, I continue to belong to the most privileged demographic on the whole globe… I don’t have any experience with [it]. The question that has to be answered is how much of [this] has always been there and how much of it you have gained as a result of emboldening.
If anything, I’d say that it was there all along; the cover has just been pulled off.
Sure. On the one hand, you have Nigel Farage on the radio simply flirting, knowing exactly where the line is, and on the other hand, you have Donald Trump constantly crossing the line. The “breaking point” poster [Farage’s 2016 anti-migrant poster] – there is no way you can unveil that poster in public without thinking that some people will think it’s okay to spit at brown-skinned people in the street.
Therefore, we are seeing people, prominent people, and incredibly powerful people saying these things. It is the degree to which the current language of invasion, about cultural identity, and about values being undermined — all of which is nonsense – has influenced beliefs, and it is the size of how big of an effect it has had. Those who subscribe to this theory give their hostility a reasoned basis.
Do you believe that humans, on the whole, have a moral core?
Of course, I do; you are required to as well. Take a look at the effort that is being put in to convince people of falsehoods; it is a massive effort, and it is being put in by the wealthiest people on the planet, the most influential owners of media outlets, the ideologues who have the largest platforms, and the people who buy season tickets to Question Time.
In our nation, there is a commercial and audience imperative that dictates that something must be excellent if it generates a lot of talks and gets a lot of clicks and a significant response. You can’t have fantastic songs if you’re on the side of compassion and decency because you have nothing to aim to. But of course, when average people see this stuff, they don’t see a circus or burning. They simply get lured by narcissism. Even after the counterattack, you still sound dejected.
The situation is pitiful. It is astounding how much more essential factionalism and infighting are to some types of left-wingers than taking on the Conservatives or, in the most recent few years, the government. They are fascinated with centrists, they are obsessed with Blairites, and they are concerned with denying antisemitism when it is right there in front of them, which is why the issue has been fostered by all of that obsession.
Do you see yourself having a successful career in more conventional forms of politics?
You should be forced to go into politics by referendum because people believe you could offer something to the table. I have a silent rule that everyone who wants to go into politics should be forbidden – you should be forced to go into politics by plebiscite. Therefore, it’s not very probable. In light of the fact that the Brexit party has been so successful, it’s possible that Farage believes the same thing about himself.
Simply said, Farage is a very skilled heckler. He couldn’t be involved in delivering Brexit, he couldn’t be involved in delivering policy, he couldn’t be involved in putting together a proper manifesto or assembling a proper political party; all he can do is assemble a dizzying array of rotten tomatoes, stand to the side of the stage, and throw them at the poor sods who are attempting to make some sense of the current situation. You’ve just returned from a vacation; what books did you find to be most relaxing?
Dorian Lynskey’s history of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, titled The Ministry of Truth, which I am now reading, is incredible. I am currently at the halfway point.
When was the last time you found yourself laughing out loud?
My daughter, who is 13 years old, is completely hooked on watching sketches from Saturday Night Live on YouTube. Pete Davidson’s character, Chad, makes me laugh so hard that I almost have to pee my pants every time I see him.
How do you de-stress and turn off your mind?
Authors of crime novels. Because of our location, I am able to take the dog for a stroll down the Thames on a fairly regular basis. It’s one of my favorite things to do is walk all the way up to Brentford, where there’s still a boatyard and you can get a real feeling of how the river used to be a center of industry.
In addition, I make it a point to play FIFA on the PlayStation at least once a week with one of my closest friends; the two of us have been doing this for over three decades. I keep telling myself that I should meditate more, but I just can’t seem to make the time for it.
