Jeffrey Lurie Biography and Career:

Jeffrey Robert Lurie is an American film producer, businessman, and owner of the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles. He was born and reared in New York City and Philadelphia (NFL).

Lurie was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to a Jewish family, the son of Nancy (née Smith) and Morris John Lurie. It was Philip Smith who started the General Cinema movie theatre chain, which was one of the most successful drive-in movie theatre operators in the United States at the time of its founding. Richard A. Smith is his maternal uncle. Peter and Cathy are his two younger siblings.

Jeffrey’s father died on April 14, 1961, when he was 44 years old when he was nine years old. General Cinema began acquiring bottling franchises in the late 1960s, including a Pepsi bottling facility, in order to expand its film distribution business. Over the years, General Cinema has evolved into Harcourt General Inc., a $3.7 billion conglomerate headquartered in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, with 23,700 workers in over 100 countries.

The company was once the fourth-largest movie theatre chain in the country and also held several publishing houses, three insurance businesses, and a leading global consulting firm during its heyday. A year later, Carter Hawley Hale was bought, which was at the time the tenth-largest clothing retailer in the United States, behind only Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman-Marcus at the time of acquisition.

A bachelor’s degree in English from Clark University, a master’s degree in psychology from Boston University, and a doctorate in social policy from The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, where he wrote his thesis on the portrayal of women in Hollywood films. Lurie is married with two children.

He was born to Jewish parents, but he has lived his adult life as a non-practicing Jew, despite his Jewish heritage. An adjunct assistant professor of social policy at Boston University, Lurie worked as a consultant before starting his own company.

When he graduated from college in 1983, he went to work for General Cinema Corporation, a significant film production firm founded by his grandpa, Philip Smith and led by his uncle, Richard A. Smith. During his time with the corporation, he served as a liaison between the General Cinema Corporation and the Hollywood production community. He also served as an advisor to the National Film Purchasing Office of The General Cinema.

In 1985, he went on to start Chestnut Hill Productions, which went on to produce a slew of Hollywood films and television shows. Initial projects were developed in conjunction with Tri-Star Pictures, and three of the Chestnut Hill projects were acquired by MGM/UA Communications Co., two by Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, and one by Universal Pictures.

The majority of the eight Chestnut Hill productions were acquired by Tri-Star Pictures, which then became an independent production company in 1988. As part of the agreement, Tri-Star Pictures was given a first look at any projects handled by Chestnut Hill Productions. Tri-Star and Chestnut Hill were to collaborate on development, and Tri-Star may cover the full cost of production if they so chose. Inside Job, a documentary film produced by Lurie was awarded the Academy Award (Oscar) for best documentary film on February 27, 2011.

In addition, the company produced television advertising. Two years later, Inocente, for which he served as executive producer, was nominated for a second Academy Award, this time for Best Documentary Short Film. In March 2022, he was awarded an Academy Award (Oscar) for his direction of the film “Summer of Soul.” Forbes magazine placed him No. 319 on its list of the 400 wealthiest persons in the United States in 2020.
