A lawyer, blogger, and author, Jeffrey Toobin is a CNN legal expert (since 2002). Previously, he worked for ABC News for six years as a legal commentator. As a New Yorker staff writer, he worked there from 1993 to 2020. While working as a lawyer in the 1990s, he wrote and offered legal commentary on a number of high-profile cases, including the O.J. Simpson murder trial and the investigation into the Clinton White House by Kenneth Starr.
Among his works are The Real Story of the Sex Scandal that Nearly Brought Down a President, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, and The Oath: Obama’s White House and the Supreme Court. An American Crime Story television series based on his book, The Run of His Life: The People v. OJ Simpson, premiered in 2015.
Nine Emmy Awards were given to the series. In his early years, Toobin worked as an assistant attorney in Brooklyn, clerked for a federal judge, and wrote for The New Republic. It happened in 2020 when he was sacked from The New Yorker after making an inappropriate video conversation on Skype.

Jeffrey Toobin began freelancing for The New Republic while still a student at Harvard Law School. A federal judge’s clerkship began after his graduation from law school. After that, he joined Lawrence E. Walsh’s Office of Independent Counsel, where he worked on the Iran-Contra investigation and Oliver North’s criminal trial. Working for Walsh as a young lawyer inspired him to write his first book, “Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’s First Case,” which was published in 1991.
However, Toobin and his publisher filed a preemptive lawsuit against Walsh’s objections. Ultimately, Judge John F. Keenan decided in favor of Toobin. He worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Brooklyn for three years after leaving his position with Walsh. In 1993, he joined the staff of The New Yorker, an American weekly magazine, and remained there until 2020. The journal relied on his reporting on legal matters, and he penned pieces about high-profile cases and legal disputes.
In 1994, while covering the O.J. Simpson murder trial, he broke the information that Simpson’s legal team planned to charge Mark Fuhrman with planting evidence in an article titled “An Incendiary Defense.” He also wrote for the magazine about the Florida presidential vote dispute in 2001, the Paula Jones sexual harassment case, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and the Timothy McVeigh trial, among other topics. As a broadcast legal expert for ABC News in 1996, he worked there for six years.
He supplied legal analysis throughout this time. In 2001, he won an Emmy for his reporting on the custody battle over Elian Gonzales. The nominations of four justices to the Supreme Court, the trials of Michael Jackson and George Zimmerman, and other key legal topics were all covered by him after he joined CNN Worldwide in April 2002. Toobin has written several highly acclaimed books that have sold millions of copies, making him a best-selling author.

During a zoom video call between New Yorker and WNYC radio staffers in October of 2020, he exposed himself, and as a result, was suspended from The New Yorker. He was sacked from The New Yorker the following month. WNYC’s parent organization, New York Public Radio, also banned him from its airways and podcasts for an undetermined period of time. CNN terminated his contract. Toobin claimed that he didn’t mean to do it and that he thought he was not on camera at the time.
