Joe Saylor Biography and Career:
Saylor was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, to parents who have also accomplished musicians. Both of his parents are music instructors; his mother Paula teaches in the Purchase Line School District, while his father Nevin teaches in the Indiana Area School District.
At the age of three, he started playing the drums, and during his high school years, he was a member of a jazz trio called Paj 3 together with bassist Phil Kuehn (another native of Indiana) and pianist Angelo Versace.
After receiving her diploma from Indiana Area Senior High School in 2004, Saylor went on to study music at both the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School.
Saylor is a member of Jonathan Batiste’s Stay Human, which serves as the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Saylor plays percussion for the band. In addition to that, you can see him performing in a wide variety of jazz clubs, festivals, and venues all around the globe. Jazz workshops have been held by him at a variety of educational institutions, including Stanford University.
He has given performances in a variety of venues, including the White House, the Howard Theater, Lincoln Center, Rockwood Music Hall, and Webster Hall, as well as the Great GoogaMooga. He has collaborated on stage or in the recording studio with musicians including Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, Dwayne Dolphin, Steve Wilson, Joe Lovano, Jon Faddis, and Slide Hampton, as well as Ellis Marsalis.
He was featured in the April 2016 edition of Modern Drummer, both on the cover and in a feature piece, and also appeared in the March 2014 issue of Drum Magazine. In addition, he had an appearance in the HBO series Treme in the year 2010.
Long before he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he and his band served as the opening act at a performance given by the rapper Asher Roth. Saylor contributed to the band by playing the tambourine, while his comrades performed the melodica, saxophone, and tuba respectively.
Saylor said that these individuals were there to attend a rap performance. “And what they saw initially was essentially two toys and two obsolete instruments,” the narrator says.
“About 10 minutes into it, people just began booing, and we had never experienced that before, so we just continued playing, and we just kept going harder and harder,” said the lead singer of the band. “We had never experienced it before.”
Saylor was given permission to do a solo by Batiste, the band’s leader, even though things were not going very well.
Saylor said that he was thinking that he needed to get the audience into it when, all of a sudden, he saw a microphone in the area. During his solo, he caused feedback that was so loud that it hurt the listener’s eardrums by striking the microphone with his tambourine with such power that it caused the stand to topple over. The audience went absolutely insane.
Saylor said that after that moment “they liked us from that point on.” If you went back in time any further, you would find that he was forced to sell his drum set in order to make ends meet at the time. He had a dogged determination.
He said that even if he had been forced into homelessness, he would still be confident in his decision to pursue a career in music.
Saylor said, “There was never a time when I wanted to quit, and there was never a moment where I had any misgivings.”
When he was 12 years old, his father brought him to watch Roger Humphries, a jazz drummer who was born in Pittsburgh and has performed with notable jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Charles. After that, he was determined to become a jazz musician.
Saylor reflected on the event and remarked, “That night definitely altered my life.” “As soon as I went into the club, I was certain that jazz was the musical genre for me. Roger transformed my life.”
Saylor continued to play the drums even though he also had experience with the trumpet and the upright bass when he was in school. Since the time he was three years old, he had been practicing his drumming skills on a kid-sized drum set that his father had purchased for him.
Saylor said that he initially had an affinity for drumming at church while seeing the drummer for the praise band.
“I would sit there and watch him play all the time,” he claimed. “I couldn’t get enough of it.”
Saylor then embarked on his journey toward a career in jazz immediately after his graduation from Indiana Area High School in the year 2004. After completing his undergraduate degree at the Manhattan School of Music, he went on to get his master’s degree from the Juilliard School. The determination he has to be the best that he can be seen in the manner that he plays his instrument.
You could see that he is beating the crash sign with his drumstick as he is holding it tightly against his body as if it were attempting to get away from him. On other occasions, you could see him playing the drums on the body of his kit rather than the skins.
During one of his solos, he even put his foot on top of the tom drum he was playing. The abilities that he has acquired have garnered the attention of a number of people; nonetheless, he does not seem to be bothered by that adulation. He said that his primary goals for his work are to bring people together and inspire them.
“To know that I have such an effect on other people is always the nicest feeling for me,” he added. “Anytime that I perform music for people and it reaches them and uplifts them in a specific manner, it is always the best feeling for me.”
“Through my music, I want to inspire others and show them that I love them.” Even if it means giving up his drum equipment and living on the streets for the rest of his life. Even if it means facing a hostile audience or sharing the spotlight with well-known figures in the industry.
