He has contributed to the band’s most critically and financially successful albums.

Additionally, he has had a busy solo career with mixed results, mostly because of the experimental character of his work. Prior to joining Red Hot Chili Peppers, he spent around three hours as a member of Thelonious Monster.

Following the passing of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak and the departure of original drummer Jack Irons, the Red Hot Chili Peppers started searching for replacements. DeWayne McKnight, the band’s temporary substitute on guitar, was soon followed by the addition of D.H. Peligro, a drummer. McKnight was sacked after just three appearances since it was clear that he didn’t fit in. John Frusciante joined the band for a jam session after D.H. Peligro suggested him and shortly after welcomed him into the group.

At the age of only 18, he played his debut concert with the group on September 17, 1988, in Los Angeles. After a brief tour in 1988, D.H. Peligro was dismissed and Chad Smith took his place. This change allowed the band to maintain its core lineup for the next four years. Before releasing their fourth album, Mother’s Milk, the band intermittently toured throughout 1989.

The popular songs “Higher Ground,” “Knock Me Down,” and “Taste the Pain” were produced from the album, which was certified gold in 1990. John Frusciante disagreed with the album’s producer, Michael Beinhorn, and didn’t like the strong metal sound he created despite launching the band into the mainstream.

The band terminated their agreement with E.M.I. later in 1990 and started hunting for a new producer. The band’s next album will be produced by Rick Rubin, who decided to record it at The Mansion. They completed production on the record in May 1991. It would be made available on September 24th, 1991, to favorable reviews. They became one of the most well-known bands in the country because of the singles “Under the Bridge” and “Give It Away.”

The Chili Peppers started out on the road alongside other well-known acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. John’s heroin usage became out of hand when he was on tour. He didn’t enjoy the Chili Peppers’ popularity, so he started disrupting performances in 1992, including one on Saturday Night Live. After a concert in Japan, a frustrated John Frusciante left the group and vanished into a dark and terrible drug addiction.

John turned into a hermit at this period of his life and resided in his Hollywood Hills house for days on end until running out of narcotics. During this time, he created his first solo album, Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt. John does not consider Smile From the Streets You Hold, his second studio solo album, to be a part of his body of work since it was mostly created to raise funds for more heroin. Tragically, his house caught fire, destroying his collection of antique guitars, and Frusciante just escaped. This led him to enroll himself in treatment. However, Frusciante’s tribulations had just begun.

Because he didn’t clean up after injecting heroin correctly, he developed a severe illness. Fortunately, the surgeons were able to preserve his limbs when they were close to being amputated. Frusciante now has scars on his arms that won’t go away. Additionally, Frusciante lost all of his teeth due to poor oral hygiene and drug usage, necessitating the use of dentures, which sometimes results in a small lisp in his singing.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were having a hard time replacing John in the meanwhile. As his replacement, they recruited Dave Navarro from Jane’s Addiction, but he proved to be ineffective. They released him shortly after recording One Hot Minute. Anthony was compelled to urge John to return by Flea. As soon as Frusciante returned to the group, Anthony Kiedis even gave him a brand-new guitar. The band started rehearsing and jamming. They released Californication, their seventh studio album, as a consequence. It was a huge hit and a turning point for the Chili Peppers.

Many of the songs that Frusciante continued to write while on the Californication world tour would appear in 2001 on his third solo album, To Record Only Water for Ten Days. The album differed significantly from his earlier works in that it was less obviously avant-garde or stream-of-conscious. However, the song’s music was noticeably toned down, and the words were still highly enigmatic.

He also meets and becomes acquainted with filmmaker Vincent Gallo at this time. Gallo made a music video for each song from To Record Only Water for Ten Days because they believed there was a connection between their respective bodies of work. John was also commissioned by Gallo to compose the score for The Brown Bunny, his forthcoming film.

By the Way, the Chili Peppers’ follow-up album, helped to propel them even more into the mainstream. John claims that the time he spent making the album was the happiest of his life. He continued to work on his fourth solo album, Shadows Collide with People, while he was recording. While on the By the Way Tour and following, John created a tonne of songs.

Together with Josh Klinghoffer of Fugazi and Joe Lally, he founded the side project Ataxia. About 90 minutes of material were captured throughout the group’s two-week stay together. At the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles, California, They performed twice. Later that year, Frusciante contributed five songs to the soundtrack for The Brown Bunny. The film was initially intended to just have John’s music, and he had created a whole album for it. But midway through shooting, director Vincent Gallo realized it wasn’t working and reshot a significant portion of the movie with new music.

The Will to Death, Ataxia’s Automatic Writing, DC EP, Inside of Emptiness, A Sphere in the Heart of Silence, and Curtains were among the six albums John stated he would be releasing over the course of six months in June 2004. Frusciante launched his only music video for the song The Past Recedes with the release of Curtains. He didn’t want to use a current studio or computer-assisted recording techniques, preferring to swiftly and cheaply create these recordings on analog tape.

Frusciante contributed guitar and electronic instruments to the song “Cicatriz ESP,” which marked the start of a string of collaborations with his buddy Omar Rodriguez-López and his band, The Mars Volta. His guitar solos were also included on their 2005 album Frances the Mute. He played guitar on seven of The Mars Volta’s eight songs for their third album, Amputechture, which was released in 2006. In exchange, Rodriguez-Lopez has contributed to a number of Frusciante’s solo albums and appeared as a guest on the song “Especially in Michigan” from Stadium Arcadium’s eleventh album.

By the Way was followed by the huge, two-disc album Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. However, the recording process had been challenging, and the band had started to show signs of fracture. John departed the band once again in 2010 to focus on his individual projects because he felt constrained.

In 2007, Ataxia released AW II, it’s second and last studio album. John released The Empyrean, his ninth solo album, on January 20, 2009. The concept album Empyrean was created between December 2006 and March 2008. It included a variety of incredible musicians, such as Flea, John’s former bandmate, Josh Klinghoffer, Johnny Marr, a former Smiths guitarist, the Sonus Quartet, and the New Dimension Singers. The album is “to be played as loud as possible and is suited to gloomy living rooms late at night,” according to Frusciante, who also said: “I’m incredibly thrilled with [the record] and I’ve listened to it a lot for the psychedelic experience it delivers.”

Frusciante kept working with various musicians after the publication of The Empyrean. Frusciante started an electronic duet called Speed Dealer Moms with Aaron Funk in addition to continuing to provide guitar work on The Mars Volta’s studio albums The Bedlam In Goliath and Octahedron. On Planet Mu Records, their first EP was published in December 2010.

Frusciante played guitar for Swahili Blonde, a project of percussionist/vocalist Nicole Turley, in addition to Speed Dealer Moms. In 2010, the group released Man Meat, their first album. In the same year, Frusciante served as executive producer for The Sentimental Engine Slayer, Omar Rodriguez-feature López’s film debut as a filmmaker. In February 2010, the movie had its premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Frusciante and Rodrguez-López produced two joint albums in May 2010 in addition to working on the movie. The first is an album by simply the two of them, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and John Frusciante, and the second is a quartet record called Sepulcros de Miel, which features Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Juan Alderete, Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, and Frusciante. In addition, Frusciante provided music for the Joe Dallesandro-based documentary Little Joe. The band announced on December 15th, 2019, that they had parted company with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and that Frusciante will be joining them once again.
