John Sandford Biography and Career:
John Sandford is a pseudonym used by American novelist and journalist John Roswell Camp, also known as John Sandford. In 1986, Camp was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in journalism, and in 1980, he was one of four people who were considered for the award. Additionally, the American Society of Newspaper Editors bestowed its Distinguished Writing Award on him in the year 1985. He won this award.
As of the summer of 2022, Camp is the author of fifty-four books that have been published. All of these novels have been featured, in one form or another, on the New York Times best-seller lists, with several of them making their debut at number one.
In addition to the novels Prey, Virgil Flowers, and Letty Davenport, which are all set in the same universe as Prey, he is also the co-author of three young adult books in the Singular Menace series, written with Michele Cook, and he is the co-author of the science-fiction thriller Saturn Run, written with Ctein. All of these works fall under the umbrella of the Prey universe.
He is the author of two books that are not works of fiction. One of them is about art and is titled “The Eye and the Heart: The Watercolors of John Stuart Ingle.” The other is about cosmetic surgery (Plastic Surgery: The Kindest Cut). The majority of European and Middle Eastern languages, along with Japanese and Korean, have been used to translate his writings into other languages.
During the fifteen years that the Beth-Shean Valley Archaeological Project took place in the Jordan River Valley of Israel, he was the primary financial supporter and a digger, and for many years he was also the project’s photographer. Both Amihai Mazar, director of the excavation, and Nava Panitz-Cohen, assistant director of the excavation, both of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, produced the famous five-volume report on the finds that emerged from the excavation.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa was the location of Camp’s birth on February 23, 1944. His maternal grandparents were immigrants from Lithuania, and he spent a significant portion of his formative years either living on or visiting their rural acreage. There, he became familiar with the traditional “three-holer,” subsistence gardens, a variety of farm animals and fruit trees, and summertime haying.
He began his education in Cedar Rapids Catholic schools and then transferred to the city’s public institutions, ultimately graduating from Washington Senior High School in 1962. Both his undergraduate degree in American Studies from the University of Iowa in 1966 and his graduate degree in journalism from the same institution in 1971 were earned by him. In the intervening time between his two separate enrollments at the University of Iowa.
Camp wed Susan Lee Jones in 1966, and the couple has since become parents to two children, Roswell Camp and Emily Curtis, as well as grandparents to three grandkids, Benjamin, Daniel, and Gabriel Curtis. In May of 2007, his wife Susan passed away as a result of metastasized breast cancer.
They tied the knot in October of 2013, and Michele Cook is a journalist as well as a screenwriter. They presently call Santa Fe in the state of New Mexico home. In addition to being a co-author on all three volumes in the Singular Menace series, Cook has also served as the primary editor for each and every book written by Sandford since the year 2010.

Camp started his career in journalism by serving as a reporter for the Army (he has been inducted into the “Hall of Fame” at the Defense Information School located at Fort Meade, Maryland). Following his discharge from the military, he spent one year working as a reporter for the Southeast Missourian newspaper in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. During that time, he covered events such as the racial riots in Cairo, Illinois.
Between the years 1971 and 1978, he worked as a reporter and editor for The Miami Herald. Between the years 1978 and 1990, he was a reporter and columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. During the Iraq War, he covered the conflict while embedded with the 2-147 Air Assault Battalion.
He has a strong passion for art, particularly painting and photography, in addition to his interest in archaeology. He publishes online writings on these subjects from time to time. His favorite subject in school was history. He participates in a variety of outdoor activities, such as fishing, canoeing, and skiing, among others. On a few occasions, he has participated in both sailing and SCUBA diving.
In 2010, he was thrown from a horse in the hills above Hollywood, California, and subsequently spent three months hobbling about and hating horses after the incident. He enjoys playing golf. He is a fan of Texas-based country music and believes that everyone should listen to artists such as Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billy Joe Shaver, Terry Allen, Waylon and Willie, and those guys. This would make the world a better place, according to him.
Even though they were offered at the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshops at the University of Iowa, he only enrolled in them because they were available as minor electives. Although he contributed to the campus newspaper, The Daily Iowan, with stories, he didn’t become truly interested in journalism until he was serving in the military.
The Defense Information School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana, which was operated by the United States Army, provided him with the most extensive instruction in journalism. After completing his education at that institution, he went on to work as a writer for the military in Korea. He was assigned to manage the base newspaper for the 4th United States Army Missile Command in Chunchon, Korea.
It is a strange coincidence that the command’s information officer, Lieutenant Robert Keeler, who was the only other American participating in the little publication, eventually worked for Newsday newspaper on Long Island, where he also won a Pulitzer Prize. Keeler was the only other American working on the paper.
In 1980, Camp was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for a series of stories he wrote about Native American culture. In 1986, Camp won the Pulitzer for Non-Deadline Feature Writing for a series of stories collectively titled Life on the Land: An American Farm Family. These stories were a part of Camp’s winning collection.
The series, which was created amid the agricultural crisis that was affecting the Midwest, followed a regular farm family from southwest Minnesota as they went through a whole year. In 1989, he stepped down from his position as a full-time writer for the Pioneer Press; nonetheless, he continued to contribute articles to the daily until the following year.
In 1996, he published a follow-up to Live on the Land that was set 10 years later, and he has also contributed periodic book reviews to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In more recent times, he has contributed to the online publication MinnPost.com, which focuses on Minnesota.
