Joyce Carol Oates Biography and Career:

Joyce Carol Oates was the eldest of Frederic and Caroline Oates’ three children. She was born on June 16, 1938, in Lockport, New York. On a farm that was owned by Caroline’s parents, the family made their home. The household of Joyce was run by her mother, who was a housewife, and her father, who was a tool designer. Oates was a thoughtful child who consumed a vast deal of literature. Even before she was able to write, she would tell stories through the pictures she drew. She has said that her upbringing “was boring, ordinary, nothing people would be interested in,” yet she has also revealed that “a great lot worried me.”

Oates wrote her first novel in 1953, when she was only fifteen years old, but publishers turned it down because they thought the subject matter, which was about the rehabilitation of a drug addict (which is defined as the process of restoring someone to a useful state), was too depressing for teenage readers. Following his graduation from high school, Oates was awarded a scholarship to attend Syracuse University. In 1961, after Oates had completed her master’s degree and started working on her doctorate in English, she discovered one of her own pieces in Margaret Foley’s anthology Best American Short Stories. At the time, Oates was working on her doctorate in English.

Oates then made the decision to pursue a career in writing, and in 1963 she published By the North Gate, which was her first collection of short stories (1963). In addition, Oates was a faculty member at the University of Detroit from 1961 to 1967. She and her husband made the trip to Canada in 1967 so that he could take a teaching position at the University of Windsor. It was there that they jointly established the newspaper Ontario Review in 1974. After Oates graduated from the University of Windsor in 1977, he moved on to Princeton University in New Jersey, where he initially worked as a writer-in-residence and then became a professor.

With Shuddering Fall (1964), Oates’s debut novel, tells the narrative of a romance between a young girl and a thirty-year-old stock car driver, which culminates in the death of the stock car driver in an accident. This story demonstrates Oates’s concern in evil and violence. The three novels that were Oates most famous during her early writing career make up a trilogy, which is a three-volume work that examines three distinct aspects of American society. The first one, published in 1967 and titled “A Garden of Earthly Delights,” is a narrative about the daughter of a migrant worker who marries a wealthy farmer in order to provide for her illegitimate kid. Illegitimate means that the child’s parents are not married to each other.

When the son kills his stepfather and then takes his own life, the presence of the wife is eradicated forever. Expensive People is a book written by Joyce Carol Oates in 1967 that explores the lives of people living in the suburbs whose preoccupation with acquiring material possessions reveals the hollowness of their lives. The final volume, them (1969), which won the National Book Award for fiction, details the brutality and misery faced by three generations of an urban family in the city of Detroit, Michigan. The award was presented to the author for his achievement in the field of fiction. Oates’ time spent working as a teacher in Detroit during the early 1960s aided in the development of her familiarity with the city and the socioeconomic issues that it faced.

Throughout Oates’s career as a writer, she has consistently maintained a multitasking mentality, working on multiple projects at once. Her book-length article “On Boxing” (1987) led to at least one occasion in which she provided commentary on a boxing contest that was shown on television. She had the exciting experience of having a mystery novel that she had written under a pseudonym (false writing name) accepted for publication around the same time. Oates’ work “Lives of the Twins,” which was released in 1987, was written under the pen name Rosamond Smith. In an interview with Linda Wolfe for the New York Times Book Review, Joyce Carol Oates said, “I wanted a fresh reading; I wanted to escape from my own identity.” In spite of the fact that she continued to use the moniker for numerous other novels, she started writing under her own name once again with the publication of My Heart Laid Bare. In this book, she investigates the subject of what constitutes right and evil in the 1920s.

In her novels Because It Is Bitter and Because It Is My Heart (1990), Joyce Carol Oates revisits the previously explored topics of racial prejudice and violent acts. Other works from this period include Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang (1993), which details the destructive activities of a group of teenage girls in the 1950s, and Black Water (1992), which is an account of a tragic encounter between a powerful United States senator and a young woman he meets at a party. Both of these works were published around the same time. The events of the narrative take place in the industrial town of Hammond, New York, and are cobbled together from the memories and journal entries of Maddy Wirtz, a former member of the Foxfire gang. In addition, Oates has a number of plays that were staged and published during the 1990s.

Broke Heart Blues, which was Oates’s twenty-ninth novel, was published in the year 1999. The film Blonde, which was released in March of 2000 and was based on the life of the actress Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) The novel received honorable mention for the National Book Award in the fiction category. Heat, a collection of short stories written by Oates and published in 1992, served as the inspiration for the movie Getting to Know You, which was released in June of 2000. Oates served as the collection’s editor, and the book The Best American Essays of the Century was released in the year 2000. In the year 2001, the works Middle Age: A Romance, a novel, and Beasts, a novella (a piece of writing with a length that is longer than that of a short story but shorter than that of a novel), were both published.
