On Friday, President Joe Biden forced out the acting director of the Social Security Administration because the official refused to step down from his position. Donald Trump, who served as president but is no longer in office, put forth Andrew Saul for the position of Social Security commissioner.
Millions of Americans get annual payments from Social Security for retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, making it one of the most important and extensive federal government programs.
According to the White House, one of the reasons for Andrew Saul’s termination was that he “undermined and politicized” the benefits provided by the Social Security department. Other factors also contributed to his firing. On Friday, the White House requested that David Black, who was Saul’s deputy and another nominee of Trump’s, resign from his position.
According to a statement released by the White House, “Since taking office, Commissioner Saul has undermined and politicized Social Security disability benefits, terminated the agency’s telework policy, which was used by up to 25% of the agency’s workforce, failed to repair SSA’s relationships with relevant Federal employee unions, including in the context of COVID-19 workplace safety planning, and reduced due process protections for benefits appeals.” Telework was used by up to 25% of the agency’s workforce.
