Lou Ferrigno Biography and Career:

Louis Jude Ferrigno is a retired professional bodybuilder, motivational speaker, fitness trainer/consultant, and American actor. Lou was a bodybuilder who starred in the film Pumping Iron and quickly earned the titles of IFBB Mr. America and IFBB Mr. Universe.

His most recognizable part is that of the titular character in the CBS series The Incredible Hulk. He has also made guest appearances in several European-made action/adventure movies, including Sinbad of the Seven Seas and Hercules. The 2009 film I Love You, Man and the fifth season of the reality show Celebrity Apprentice are two of his most recent performances.

Lou Ferrigno was born to Victoria and Matty Ferrigno in Brooklyn, New York. His father had been an Italian American officer in the police force. Lou’s hearing was severely damaged by a series of ear infections he had shortly after birth (though his condition was not diagnosed until he was three years old). You did not allow the fact that he was shot to stop him from pursuing a career in sports.

At 13, Lou began lifting weights, partly inspired by Steve Reeves’s portrayal of Hercules. He likes the Hercules movies starring Reeves and would eventually assume the title role. Spider-Man and the Hulk were two more of Lou’s boyhood idols. For his education in mechanical engineering, Lou went to St. Athanasius Grammar School and then to Brooklyn Technical High School.

In 1973, based in Columbus, OH, Lou won his first big titles as IFBB Mr. America and IFBB Mr. Universe. When Lou won his first Mr. Universe title at age 21, he set a record that has yet to be broken. He placed second on his first try at the Mr. Olympia competition in 1974. Pumping Iron, a documentary from 1975, chronicles his subsequent third-place finish the following year.

Before beginning his bodybuilding career, Lou worked as a sheet metal worker at a factory in Brooklyn. When a buddy and coworker inadvertently severed his hand, he decided to quit since he did not like the risky employment. After that, Lou took a long break from competition, during which time he briefly played defensive line with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He was cut after just two games because he lacked football experience.

Television producer Kenneth Johnson (Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, V, Alien Nation) sought the appropriate person to represent the hulking comic book hero The Incredible Hulk when the now-iconic bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron was released in 1977. Lou was the heaviest professional bodybuilder of his day at 6 feet 5 inches tall and 285 pounds. He beat out Arnold Schwarzenegger, another bodybuilder, in an audition for the role of the green-skinned Goliath.

Bill Bixby was cast as Lou’s submissive scientifically altered ego and was given the part of the titular character to play opposite Lou. While Lou and Bixby did not exchange words on camera, the two were friends. Lou described Bixby as “a mentor and a father figure” who took Lou under his wing and guided him throughout his life. While the last two episodes of “The Incredible Hulk” would not air until May 1982, Lou continued to portray the character of “The Hulk” until 1981.

Once the first television series based on The Incredible Hulk had concluded its run, the show spawned several television movies since it was such a rating phenomenon. Once the events of “The Incredible Hulk” ended, Lou continued to keep himself occupied. Cage (1989), Sinbad of the Seven Seas (1989), and Hercules (1983) were among his future cinematic roles.

Around the beginning of the 1990s, Lou got back into bodybuilding and competed for the Mr. Olympia title in 1992 and 1993. His quest to defeat Robbie Robinson and David Coe was the topic of the documentary Stand Tall, released in 1996. After this, he decided to end his career in athletic competitions.

Lou’s most recent movies are Hulk (2003), The Incredible Hulk (2008), I Love You, Man (2009), The Avengers (2012), and Celebrity Apprentice: Season 5. In addition, Lou was a contestant on the fifth season of Celebrity Apprentice (2012).

The most recent thing he and his family have developed is a Ferrigno FIT community centered on good routines, lives, and ideals. On May 3, 1980, he wed Carla Green, a psychiatrist, and she soon started working for him as his manager. Carla Green eventually went on to become a personal trainer herself. Shanna was born in 1981, Louie in 1984, and Brent in 1985 are their three children (1990).

In February of 2006, Lou was sworn in as a reserve sheriff deputy for the county of Los Angeles, California. In November of 2010, Lou was sworn in as a member of a volunteer sheriff posse for Maricopa County, Arizona. Other members of this posse include actors Steven Seagal and Peter Lupus, whose mission is to assist in controlling illegal immigration in the greater Phoenix Valley area.
