Lupe Fiasco Biography and Career:

Lupe Fiasco is not only one of the most intellectual and mysterious artists working in the industry since the middle of the 2000s, but he is also one of the most prominent artists in his field, as evidenced by the fact that he has been awarded a Grammy as well as multiple gold and platinum certifications. His name has been well-known since his featured appearance on Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky” (2005), a hit single that set him up for success with a career that has entailed seven albums, highlighted by the Top Ten releases Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor (2007), the chart-topping Lasers (2011), and Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1 (2013). It took the rapper and producer a few years to gain (2012).

Lupe is known for his intricate tales and clever metaphorical lyrics, but he hasn’t been afraid to make tracks that have commercial appeal, like “Superstar” and “The Show Goes On,” which both made it into the top ten. Lupe achieved a new measure of creative freedom throughout the second part of the 2010s, as heard on the linked full-length albums Drogas Light (2017) and Drogas Wave (2018), as well as 2022’s Drill Music in Zion. This came after a decade of sometimes contentious ties with big label Atlantic.

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known as MC Wasalu, started rapping in junior high school and joined a group called da Pak a few years later. MC Wasalu is headquartered in Chicago. Before Lupe reached 20, the band had already secured a recording contract with Epic, issued one song, and then disbanded. L.A. Reid became Lupe’s manager and signed him to Arista as a solo artist. However, before anything significant could take place—only a promotional single and a couple of guest appearances were scheduled—Reid was let go from his position at the record label. Jay-Z was one of the people who vocally supported Lupe.

In the end, Lupe signed with Atlantic, yet another large label. After the release of several mixtapes, an appearance on Kanye West’s “Touch the Sky,” and his debut single “Kick, Push,” the album Food & Liquor was supposed to come out in the early part of 2006. However, an unfinished version of the album was leaked in the spring, which caused its official release to be pushed back to September of that same year. The album reached its highest position on the Billboard 200 at number eight and won the rapper three nominations for a Grammy.

The song “Daydreamin’,” featuring Jill Scott, was deemed the Best Urban/Alternative Performance and was given the prize. In December 2007, a highly developed follow-up album called The Cool was made available. It was certified gold and led to four further Grammy nominations thanks to the tune “Superstar,” which was Lupe’s first record to reach the Top Ten and attaining platinum status. On the path to the release of his third album, Lasers, Lupe encountered many challenges, even though he already had a track record of tremendous financial success and critical acclaim.

The campaign resulted in a petition demanding Atlantic release the long-delayed album, which over 30,000 followers signed. A fan demonstration followed this in front of the label’s headquarters in New York City. When Atlantic finally released it in March 2011, Lasers debuted at number one on not one, not two, but three charts: the Billboard 200, the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Albums, and the Hot Rap Albums. It was driven by “The Show Must Go On,” which reached number ten on the Hot 100, and “Out of My Head,” which peaked at forty on the Hot 100 and eleven on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

While the third album was still in the pre-release phase, the MC started working on his fourth studio album, which would become Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Part 1. Its development and subsequent delivery in September 2012 were not particularly challenging. Because “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” sampled Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth’s classic song “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” from 1992, Lupe received some criticism for the music. For “Bitch Bad,” which was rebuked by Spin magazine, Lupe called for a boycott of the publication. Lupe has never been one to avoid controversy.

This album continued Lupe’s reign atop the Billboard Rap Albums chart and was responsible for one of his most successful singles, “Battle Scars.” 2014 and 2015 saw the release of a few songs that were not part of an album, including “Old School Love,” which included Ed Sheeran as a collaborator. Tetsuo & Youth’s fifth full-length album, Tetsuo & Youth, was a return to form and came very close to topping the rap chart. The album was inspired by Lupe’s childhood in Chicago and was rich with punch lines. The year 2016 was planned to see the release of three albums.

Lupe was able to release the songs “Pick Up the Phone” and “Made in the USA” throughout the year despite being hampered by what he described as “clearing and mixing problems.” In December of the same year, Lupe also published a song titled “N.E.R.D.” on her SoundCloud page. The piece included a lyric that the Anti-Defamation League deemed to be anti-Semitic. The rapper responded to the criticism by saying, “I’m officially not going to release any more songs,” which he posted on social media.

Drogas Light was his first album to be independently released, and Thirty Tigers released it in February of the following year. Guest performances on the album came from Ty Dolla $ign, Big K.R.I.T., and Rick Ross. The release of Drogas Wave took place in September of 2018, and it was inspired in part by a narrative of Africans who escaped from a slave ship, adapted to live underwater, and sank other ships to gain their freedom. “Run Game,” a track that had never been published before, was launched by Fiasco in June of 2019.

Chill’s Spotlight is a compilation project organized by the rapper’s 1st & 15th label co-founder Charles “Chill” Patton, and the single was the first entry in the project. The music was recorded in 2006, and it was the first entry in the project. In July 2020, HOUSE was released as a collaboration EP with producer Kaelin Ellis. In October of the same year, TAPE TAPE was released as yet another EP involving Soundtrack, who has been associated with Fiasco for a long time.

The soundtrack also contributed to 2022’s album, Drill Music in Zion. During the recording of the album, Fiasco went into a file of recent beats that he had developed and penned rhymes in a flurry, completing the project in only three days. Ayesha Jaco and Nayirah both contributed vocals to the album in their capacity as guest singers. In addition to his activities in the music industry, Fiasco began working at MIT in 2022 as a visiting professor, where he was responsible for teaching a course on rap.
