Lydia Davis Biography and Career:

Lydia Davis is a novelist, in addition to being a writer of short stories and translator. She is the author of one novel, The End of the Story (1995), and six collections of short stories, including Can not and Will not (2014). The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis (2009), and one collection of nonfiction, Essays One (2019), was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Can not and Will not (2014) is her most recent collection of short stories.

The anthology she published in 2007, titled Variations of Disturbance, was put up for consideration for the National Book Prize. Davis is most well-known for her very brief works of fiction, sometimes known as “micro” or “flash” fiction; many of her tales are just one phrase or one paragraph long. She has translated works of fiction and philosophy initially written in French, including Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert (2010) and Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust (2003).

Her achievements and medals include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Man Booker International Prize, among other prestigious honors and prizes. She taught at SUNY Albany for many years before retiring.

Davis began her education at Barnard College in 1965, and in her first year, she became acquainted with the author Paul Auster, to whom she would later become temporarily married (1974–78). When Davis and Auster were in their mid-twenties, they split their time between living in Paris and the south of France. There, they made a meager income by working as translators.

Davis continued to rely heavily on translation work as her principal source of financial support; among her numerous translations are novels written by authors such as Maurice Blanchot, Michel Leiris, Gustave Flaubert, and Pierre-Jean Jouve. Both Marcel Proust’s Swann’s Way (2003) and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (2010) were adapted by her, and both were released to widespread critical acclaim after their respective rewrites.

The American prose poet Russell Edson influenced Davis when developing her distinctive short tale style. She still needed to successfully produce short tales that followed a more conventional organizational framework. Davis said that she owed the freedom to write that she had to Edson, who gave her complete creative control. This newly discovered liberty paved the way for revolutionary experimentation with language and writing standards.

She realized that her strength lay in transforming mundane vignettes into ones that prompted deep reflection. Since her narratives are often just a single line long, people have variously referred to them as poetry, observations, parables, jokes, aphorisms, and anecdotes. This is because her tales may be so brief.

Davis’s fiction started garnering critical recognition much later in her career, despite her early praise for her translations. Her first story collection, The Thirteenth Woman and Other Stories was published in 1976. Her fourth collection, Break It Down (1986), was published 11 years later.

As a result of her later success, notably among authors and literary critics, some of her early collections have been republished. Her popularity continues to grow. Contemporary writers such as Jonathan Franzen, Miranda July, and David Foster Wallace are said to have been affected by her work.

Can not and Won’t, Davis’s latest collection of short stories, was released in 2014, and in 2009 she published The Collected Tales, a group of short stories that she had written for the previous 30 years. In addition to short tales, she is the author of The End of the Story (1995), about a writer who goes through a breakup with her partner and attempts to make sense of it by writing a novel about it. Elements from the short tale “Story” written by Davis are included in the storyline. Her nonfiction books will be published as Essays One and Essays Two.

Davis was honored by the French government with the title of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1999 for her fiction and translations. She also was awarded a fellowship from the MacArthur Foundation in 2003, an Award of Merit medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Man Booker International Prize.
