Marc Benioff Biography and Career:
Marc Russell Benioff is an Internet business owner from the United States. He was born on September 25, 1964, and as of May 2020, he was worth $7.1 billion. He started, is chairman of, and is CEO of the enterprise cloud computing company Salesforce. As of June 2020, he owned 3.36 percent of the shares in Salesforce, which were worth $4.8 billion. Benioff was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area by a Jewish family that had been there for a long time. In 1982, he finished high school at Burlingame.
Benioff went to the University of Southern California, where he joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and got a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1986. David Benioff, who runs shows and makes TV shows, is a distant cousin of Marc. He has two children with his wife, Lynne Benioff. The family lives in California, in the city of San Francisco. Benioff sold his first app, How to Juggle when he was still in high school. He got $75 for it. He started Liberty Software when he was 15 years old. He made and sold games like Flapper for the Atari 8-bit.
By the time Benioff was 16, he was getting royalties of $1,500 a month, which was enough to pay for college. Benioff did internships at Apple Computer’s Macintosh division as an assembly language programmer while he was at USC. He planned to keep programming after college, but his professors at USC told him to get customer-focused work experience instead.
So, after he graduated, he took a customer-service job at Oracle Corporation. Benioff worked at Oracle for 13 years in different executive roles in sales, marketing, and product development before he started Salesforce. He was named Oracle’s Rookie of the Year when he was 23. Three years later, he became the company’s youngest vice president. He learned a lot from Mata Amritanandamayi, a Hindu guru, and Colin Powell before he started his own business. Benioff started Salesforce in March 1999 in a rented apartment in San Francisco.
In a marketing statement, he said that the company’s goal was to be “The End of Software.” He has been preaching for a long time that software as a service would replace traditional enterprise software. He came up with the term “platform as a service” and helped Salesforce grow by letting customers build their own apps on the company’s architecture or in the Salesforce cloud.
Marc and his wife Lynne bought Time on September 16, 2018, for $190 million. In 2009, he was named one of the Young Global Leaders by the members of the World Economic Forum. In 2016, he was named one of Fortune’s 50 World’s Greatest Leaders because he worked hard as CEO to make sure everyone had the same rights and to solve other social problems.
He was also named Businessperson of the Year by the readers of Fortune. Barron’s called him one of the best CEOs in the world, and The Economist gave him their Innovation Award. From 2003 to 2005, he was the vice chair of the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee. Forbes Magazine has named Salesforce one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for the past five years in a row. Fortune Magazine has named Salesforce the World’s Most Admired Software Company for the past four years in a row and the Best Place to Work for the past eight years in a row.
On May 16, 2014, Benioff got an honorary degree from the University of Southern California called a Doctor of Humane Letters. Benioff was one of the business leaders who took part in a meeting at the White House on March 17, 2017, when German Chancellor Angela Merkel was there. In 2019, he was chosen to join the National Academy of Engineering “for his leadership in cloud computing and corporate giving.” Benioff is the Chairman of the Salesforce. com Foundation, a charity that was started in 2000.
He also created the 1-1-1 model of integrated corporate philanthropy, in which companies give back to the community 1% of their equity, 1% of their employee hours, and 1% of their products. Forbes’ America’s 50 Top Giver list from 2015 and the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Philanthropy 50 list from 2010, 2014, and 2015 both named Benioff and his wife Lynne as top philanthropists. In June 2010, they told the UCSF Children’s Hospital that they were giving it $100 million. In 2014, Marc and Lynne Benioff gave UCSF and Oakland Children’s Hospital, which are now both called Benioff Children’s Hospitals, another $100 million. Marc Benioff gave $900,000 to Team Trees in November 2019. Benioff has said that businesses are the best places in the world to bring about change.
He uses the stakeholder approach to leadership, which was created by Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum. This approach says that leaders should serve not only their shareholders, but also customers, employees, partners, communities, and the environment, in order to make the world a better place. Benioff said in March 2015 that Salesforce would cancel all employee programs and travel in the state of Indiana after SB 101, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed.
SB 101 was a controversial bill that would let companies and people refuse service to LGBT people based on their religious beliefs. As the biggest tech employer in Indiana (since ExactTarget was bought in 2013), Benioff led a group of business leaders from around the world to fight back against the law. Eventually, the Indiana State Legislature passed an amendment to the law that protects LGBT customers, tenants, and employees. Benioff led a movement against Georgia’s HB 757, the First Amendment Defense Act, in February 2016.
