Mark Latham Biography and Career:

Mark Latham, full name Mark William Latham, is an Australian politician who served as the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 2003 to 2005. He was born on February 28, 1961, in Sydney, Australia.

In 1982, Latham earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Sydney. He began his political career working in former ALP Prime Minister Gough Whitlam’s office. Latham was elected to the city council of Liverpool, a Sydney suburb, in 1987, and became mayor in 1991. He eventually ran for federal office and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1994, representing Werriwa, the seat originally held by his mentor, Whitlam, from 1952 to 1978. Latham became shadow minister of education with a front-bench seat when the ALP went into opposition after the 1996 elections, but he resigned amid conflicts with opposition leader Kim Beazley during the 1998 elections.

Following the 2001 elections, Latham was reintroduced to the front bench as the shadow minister for economic ownership, replacing Beazley. Crean appointed him shadow treasurer and opposition business manager in 2003. When Crean lost his party’s confidence and resigned later that year, he threw his support behind Latham, who was confirmed by his party in December 2003 and became the ALP’s youngest leader in 100 years at the age of 42.

In 2004, Latham ran for Prime Minister against John Howard, the head of the conservative coalition. Howard, who had already spent three terms as Prime Minister, slammed Latham’s economic credentials, saying that if he became Prime Minister, interest rates would soar. Latham centred his campaign on education and health-care reform, and he took a harsh line against Australia’s participation in the US-led Iraq War, promising to pull Australian soldiers out, prompting a retort from US President George W. Bush. Despite a high rate of success early in the campaign, Latham was defeated in the election in October.

Latham’s defeat in 2004 devastated the ALP, and he announced his departure from both Parliament and the party leadership in January 2005, citing health problems. During his tenure, Latham was chastised for his abrasive, polarising demeanour, which some viewed as a strength of independence, while others regarded it as a weakness. Following that, he worked for a variety of media sites, however his tenures were often brief, owing in part to complaints about his behaviour.

Latham was hired by Sky News in 2016, and he began cohosting the channel’s conversation show Outsiders the following year. Sky News, however, terminated his contract in 2017 after a series of contentious comments, including questioning the sexuality of a student celebrating International Women’s Day. He returned to politics the next year, joining One Nation, a right-wing, anti-immigrant party, and rising to become its head in New South Wales. In the 2019 elections, he was elected to the state’s Legislative Council as a member of One Nation.

Latham wrote many policy publications for the ALP leadership and published The Latham Diaries, a political biography, in 2005.
