Matthew Joseph West is a Contemporary Christian artist who was born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 25, 1977. His full name is Matthew Joseph West. He has recorded four studio albums, and his songs “More,” “You Are Everything,” and “The Motions” have all reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. CBN.com: Your newest record, The Story of Your Life, is a concept album that serves as a follow-up to your previous release, Something to Say. Can you tell us about it? When did you first have the thought that led to it?

Matthew West: Usually, what I would do is complete recording something like “Something to Say,” and then the following day, I would begin composing the songs that would follow “Something to Say.” On the other hand, I didn’t feel any pressure to compose anything fresh for the album this time around.

Something to Say was, in many respects, a very personal statement for me as an artist. It was a really critical period in my personal life when I overcame what I thought was going to be career-ending surgery. The battle that I had going into that album and having vocal surgery was something that I had to overcome. This time around, though, I questioned God by saying, “Well, OK, what comes after Something to Say? What do I say? What would you want to communicate to them via me?

And the idea came to me at that moment. Let folks speak it. And it made me nervous because I thought to myself, “OK, God, that essentially implies that I lose all control. I am aware of my life. However, it was not sufficient this time. As if having voice surgery hadn’t already made me feel like a helpless child, God was going to test me even further this time. My songwriting was going to be challenged, which was an area of my life in which I had a lot of self-assurance.

I had a conversation with my brother, who also serves as my manager, and I asked him, “What do you think? Isn’t this strange? Then he said, “Man, this is unbelievable. People are going to have a sense of increased agency as a result of this. People will have a voice as they’ve never had one before thanks to this.” My record label gave its approval.

I didn’t want it to have a “contest” vibe to it like there was some kind of game where you could win a chance to have a song written about you on a Matthew West album. My first impression was that doing so would destroy the fundamental purpose of the creation of this. I wanted to approach it in a manner that was more natural.

On day one, I was given one thousand different accounts. That was the way things were for the first two days. I had the immediate thought, “holy cow, something spectacular is going to take place,” and it came out of nowhere. I went to Tennessee and rented a cabin that was approximately a quarter of an hour away from my home but had the atmosphere of being in the middle of nowhere. And at that time, I read ten thousand different tales. I was there for two months.
