Melissa Etheridge Biography and Career:
Melissa Etheridge, full name Melissa Lou Etheridge (born May 29, 1961, Leavenworth, Kansas, United States), is an American singer and songwriter best known for her raspy rock-and-roll vocals. She was also famous for being forthright about her sexual orientation from an early age.
Etheridge started playing guitar at the age of eight and composing songs at the age of eleven. In her adolescent years, she polished her abilities by performing in local bands (emulating inspirations such as Bruce Springsteen and Pete Townshend of the Who) and temporarily attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston before returning to Kansas.
On her 21st birthday, Etheridge packed her belongings and moved to Los Angeles, where she performed in clubs and bars until Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, signed her to a recording deal the following year. With the popular track “Bring Me Some Water,” Melissa Etheridge’s first album, Melissa Etheridge (1988), garnered her a nomination for a Grammy Award. As his career progressed, he released two more albums, Brave and Crazy (1989) and Never Enough (1992), the latter of which won a Grammy for the song “Ain’t It Heavy.”
At a gay and lesbian celebration of President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993, Etheridge revealed to the audience what many of her most committed followers had suspected all along: she was a lesbian, as many of her most devoted admirers had believed. Later that year, the album Yes I Am was released, which included the smash songs “Come to My Window” (which was also a Grammy winner) and “I’m the Only One.” Soon after, Etheridge’s connection with film director Julie Cypher was made public, and she was criticized for it.
Having been together since 1990, the pair featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine in 1996, and in a Rolling Stone piece in 2000, they announced that singer David Crosby had contributed the sperm for the two children Cypher had given birth to. When she ended her engagement with Cypher later that year, Etheridge documented the events of their relationship and separation in her book, The Truth Is…My Life in Love and Music, as well as on her album Skin, all of which were published in 2001.
When Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she made an unforgettable performance at the Grammy Awards in 2005, where she received a lifetime achievement award. In spite of the fact that she was still bald following chemotherapy treatments, Etheridge delivered a passionate version of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart,” which brought many in the crowd to tears. The next year, Etheridge resumed her traveling schedule. She also composed and sang the Academy Award-winning song “I Need to Wake Up” for the 2006 Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which won the film’s best documentary award as well.
A year after releasing her audio autobiography, The Awakening (2007), Etheridge embarked on a concert tour that was aimed to recount the tale of her life via a sequence of very intimate songs. A New Thought for Christmas, which was released the same year, was her first-holiday album. Among her subsequent albums was 4th Street Feeling (2012), on which she performed all of the guitar parts.
Memphis Rock and Soul (2016), which was a compilation of classic covers; and The Medicine Show (2019), which was her 15th studio album and her first to be released on iTunes. For One Way Out (2021), Etheridge played songs that she had written more than three decades before. Beckett Cypher, Etheridge’s oldest son, died in 2020 after a long battle with opiate addiction, according to his mother.
