Michael Savage Biography and Career:

Michael Savage is a radio presenter, author, and political commentator for the conservative American right. He is the voice of The Savage Nation, a Talk Radio Network program heard throughout the country. The Savage Nation is the fourth most-listened-to radio talk program in the United States, with an audience of 8–10 million listeners on 400 stations nationwide. He’s published several books on alternative medicine under the name Michael Weiner. He uses the pen name Michael Savage to publish controversial political works.

Savage is one of three children born to Benjamin and Rae Weiner, and he was born Michael Alan Weiner in the Bronx. He is of Russian-Jewish descent. His formative years were challenging, he said. His mother died in 2003, and his antique business owner’s father died at age 57.

In 1963, Weiner got a bachelor’s degree in biology from Queens College, where he had previously studied, after graduating from Jamaica High School in 1958. After finishing his education, Weiner spent many years in a New York City high school classroom. After divorcing Carol Ely in 1964, he met his present wife Janet and wed the following year. His first wife claims she fell pregnant twice despite Weiner’s wishes for her to get an abortion each time.

At the same time, Weiner was employed by Timothy Leary, the renowned psychedelic drug advocate, as the keeper of the stone gatehouse on Leary’s Millbrook estate. Since Weiner did not take LSD, Leary thought he would be a good fit for the position. Later, Weiner attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and received master’s degrees in ethnobotany and anthropology. In 1978, he graduated with a doctorate in nutritional ethnomedicine from the University of California, Berkeley. The topic of his thesis was Fijian dietary ethnomedicine.

He got interested in the 19th-century sailor Charles Savage while in the South Pacific; Savage is often credited as being the first person to introduce weapons to Fiji. Weiner changed his name to Savage because of this obsession.

Savage’s son, Russell Weiner, founded the firm that makes the Rockstar energy drink; he and his second wife, Janet, are also the parents of a girl. Janet, Russell’s mom, worked as the company’s CFO until July 2009. Rebecca Lin Yops, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Yops, has taught in primary schools. Savage has said that he does believe in God but only visits places of worship sometimes. In the 1980s, Savage frequented a Berkeley Chabad residence for Friday night services.

In the early 1960s, Savage introduced himself to a group of authors in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. During this time, he met the Beat writers Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and became good friends with them. Correspondence between Savage and Ginsberg, which spans four years and consists of 10 letters and three postcards, is archived alongside Ginsberg’s archives at Stanford University.

Robert Cathcart, a friend of Savage’s who met him in the 1980s, claims that in their private chats, Savage expressed conservative political beliefs. In the early 1980s, Savage allegedly grew estranged from the North Beach culture, as described by Schwartz. Savage and his leftist buddies often argued. Savage responded to questions about why he has changed his politics and other beliefs: “I was once a child; I am now a man.” Savage has said that several experiences in his life have led him to his current conservative beliefs.

Savage claims that his first employment after college was as a social worker and that this experience influenced his views on welfare. He related an occasion when his supervisor had him give a welfare recipient a cheque to buy furniture for their apartment while he lived in a cardboard box. When he suggested in the 1980s that closing gay bathhouses could be essential in reaction to the burgeoning AIDS pandemic, he encountered what he viewed as “political opposition” as a writer of health and nutrition books.

Publishers rejected his last health and nutrition book, Immigrants and Epidemics, in 1994 because it was too provocative. Savage submitted a job application to be Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley in 1996. The university instead chose Orville Schell, an award-winning journalist, and China experts. Savage filed suit against the school, claiming he was a victim of conservative bias. Savage ultimately decided not to pursue legal action.

His 1994 book was turned down, so he recorded a faux radio talk program on illegal immigrants and pandemics as a demo recording. To make a career transition and become a radio talk show presenter, he sent this video to 250 radio stations. Savage’s radio career began on KGO (a San Francisco news/talk station) on March 21, 1994, when he filled in as host for leftist Ray Taliaferro. He got his talk program on KSFO, KGO’s sibling station, a year later.

In the autumn of 2006, Savage’s program was the third most listened to in the United States, with 8-10 million listeners. According to Savage, his listeners are “literate callers with intelligence, wit, and energy.” He claims to create shows with “…hard edge combined with humor and education…Those who listen to me hear a bit of Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein.”

Contrasting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Laura Schlessinger, Savage of the Bay Area “mixes conservative diatribe and blunt observations with acerbic humor and a gift for gab,” as Mark de la Via of the San Jose Mercury News put it. Because of this, his radio talk show ratings have skyrocketed, and his books have become bestsellers.

KNEW-AM (910 kHz) in San Francisco, Savage’s home market, stated on September 10, 2009, that they would replace Savage’s show with that of John and Ken from KFI-AM (640 kHz)/Los Angeles. KNEW’s program director John Scott emailed the station’s listeners that the station was moving “…in a different philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and more local information.”

Arbitron monthly ratings show that KNEW-AM’s popularity has declined since Savage was fired. KTRB in San Francisco took up the show for the Bay Area and observed an increase in the afternoon drive-time audience. However, when KTRB fell into receivership in September 2010, the show was one of the first victims.
