Mo Farah Biography and Career:

Mogadishu, Somalia, native Mohamed Farah (born March 23, 1983) is a British distance runner who competed in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He has won gold medals in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter events at both the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Farah and his twin brother, Hassan, were two of the six children of Muktar Farah, a British-born businessman, and his Somali wife, who had six children in all. The Farah family was forced to flee their house in Mogadishu in 1990 as a result of a violent war in Somalia. The twin boys and a sister were sent to live with their grandmother in Djibouti, which is a neighbouring country.

Farah was separated from Hassan when he was eight years old, and he was transferred to live with his father in London, along with two younger siblings. In spite of the fact that Farah had no prior understanding of English, he came with a passion for association football (soccer), which he intended to pursue. Instead, he was encouraged to start running by his physical education instructor when he was 11 years old. He subsequently acted as best man during Farah’s wedding, which took place in 2010.

The next year, Farah placed tenth in his debut English schools cross-country championships, but the following year he won the event, claiming the first of five school crowns in his career. In his early career, he received help from a number of prominent personalities, including women’s runner Paula Radcliffe, who paid for his driving lessons, and benefactor Sir Eddie Kulukundis, who paid for the legal expenditures associated with his naturalisation as a British citizen.

Coach Alan Storey introduced Farah to the sport in 2001, and he went on to win the European juvenile 5,000-meter championship the following year. After commencing his training in Kenya and Ethiopia in 2008, Farah went on to win European medals in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres in 2010.

Farah relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 2011 to train with American coach Alberto Salazar, who is based in the city. His training partner in Salazar’s squad was American Galen Rupp, who would go on to win the silver medal in the 10,000-meter final at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He won the world 5,000-meter championships at the 2011 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) world championships in Taegu, South Korea, following a close second in the 10,000 metres at the previous year’s IAAF world championships in Beijing.

This was Farah’s only outdoor loss of the year. However, after losing three of his four 2012 indoor races, including a fourth-place finish in the 3,000 metres at the World Indoor Championships, Farah remained undefeated outdoors in 2012, most notably by winning two gold medals at the London Olympics in the 1500 and 3,000 metres.

As if to confirm his dominance, Farah won gold medals in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-metre events at the 2013 World Championships in Doha, Kazakhstan. Following that, he went on to win both of his hallmark events in the European Championships the following year, and he repeated the feat at the World Championships in 2015. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he won gold medals in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races for the second time in a row, becoming just the second man (after Finland’s Lasse Virén) to do so in successive Olympics.

A gold medal in the 10,000 metres and a silver in the 5,000 metres were awarded to Farah at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China. Soon after winning the championships, he shifted his concentration away from track events and onto marathon running. The following year, he competed in and won his first marathon in Chicago. In 2012, Farah was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
