Nkem Owoh Biography and Career:

Nkem Owoh is a well-known Nigerian actor and comedian. He was born on February 7, 1946. His performance in the Nigerian movie “Stronger than Pain” earned him the “Best Actor in a Leading Role” award from the African Movie Academy in 2008. Nkem Owoh was born in Nigeria, specifically in the state of Enugu. After completing primary and secondary education, he enrolled in the Engineering program at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta and continued his education there.

Owoh started his acting career while he was still a student at the university, appearing in various projects for both television and cinema. In addition to that, he is well-known for playing the song “I Go Chop Your Dollar,” which is about scams involving advance fee payments. In the movie “The Master,” in which Owoh portrays the role of a con artist, the song was used. Both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission decided to prohibit the music from being broadcast.

In conclusion to a probe that lasted for seven months and was codenamed “Operation Apollo” by the Dutch police, Owoh was taken into custody in 2007 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (specifically in the Bijlmermeer area of the Amsterdam Zuidoost municipality). When the police conducted a raid at the venue where Owoh was performing a musical act, they also detained 111 other persons on suspicion of lottery fraud and immigration offenses. Owoh was among those arrested. After some time, Owoh was let go.

Owoh was taken captive in eastern Nigeria in November 2009. His kidnappers sought a 15 million naira ransom. Owoh was reportedly freed after his family members paid a ransom of 1.4 million nairas to secure his freedom. Nkem Owoh, a veteran actor in the Nigerian film industry, has said that the storylines told in Nollywood are superior to their corresponding stories in Bollywood and Hollywood. Recently, the film star gave a talk on storytelling in Nigeria’s film, television, and radio industries in Enugu.

He said that Nigerian movies reflect true tales and events across the country. The actor said that it is unfair to judge the quality of films produced in Nigeria by comparing them to those made in more developed nations. According to Owoh, Nigerian filmmakers only employ technology imported from countries that are so much farther forward. Our narrative path is superior to any other tale that might have emerged from those forests.

“We do not have the technology; however, we do have the tale,” he said. “I believe that with the stories and creativity we have among us, if we get the necessary technology, we will go places.” “We are a third-world country that is coming up, and people should give us kudos for the level we have attained.”According to Owoh, the Nollywood sector has just capitalized on the many forms of technology at its disposal.

When you consider the length of time we’ve been in business, and how we got our start, you have to give us credit for the incredible headway we’ve made in this field,” he said. With the technology that we have available right now, I feel that Nollywood still has a very long way to go before it can be considered successful. Owoh urged up-and-coming performers to have the patience to advance their careers and contribute to the overall expansion of the business. “If you don’t feel like this is your calling, leave here.
