Oliver Stone Biography and Career:

Oliver Stone is one of the few directors who is motivated more by the artistic value of his work than by the financial rewards. Stone’s films on unusual topics including the Kennedy murder, the Vietnam War, and the US involvement in El Salvador have brought him widespread acclaim as a filmmaker.

‘Seizure,’ a horror-thriller film, marked Stone’s directorial debut. This Oscar victor has also worked behind the camera as a producer and a screenwriter. Stone, who won the “Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award,” is widely considered one of the most thoughtful and dedicated directors working in Hollywood today.

Perhaps no other contemporary film director is as creative as Oliver Stone. Popular examples of his work include Salvador, Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon, JFK, Natural Born Killers, Heaven and Earth, and Nixon. Stone, before establishing his mark in the film industry, was an infantry soldier in the US Army during the Vietnam War, which is an interesting fact in and of itself.

New York City is where William Oliver Stone’s parents, Louis Stone (a stockbroker) and Jacqueline Goddet (a model) had their first child on September 15th, 1946. The separation of his parents in 1962 was a traumatic experience for him.

He completed high school at The Hill in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and earned his diploma in 1964. He started working at the Paris sugar and cocoa mercantile exchange when he was just seventeen years old.
After that, he decided to attend Yale University but left after his freshman year to become a professor at the Free Pacific Institute in South Vietnam. After around six months of service, he was hired on board a U.S. Merchant Marine vessel as a wiper.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1967 and stayed until November 1968, serving with the 25th Infantry Division. He was sent to Vietnam where he would face enemy forces. He was honored with a plethora of medals and decorations for his valiant service.

He completed his cinema studies at NYU and graduated in 1971. His twelve-minute film, titled “Last Year in Viet Nam,” was shot during this period. The documentary was very well-reviewed. It wasn’t until the 1974 horror-thriller Seizure that he got his start behind the camera; he also co-wrote the script. The film, which lasts a total of 98 minutes, tells the tale of a horror author who, in a sense, has his worst nightmares come true.

His second picture, a psychological thriller titled “The Hand,” was written and directed by him in 1981. Filmed with Michael Caine and Andrea Marcovicci, “The Lizard’s Tail” was adapted from a book by Marc Brandell.

War drama film Salvador, set during the Salvadoran Civil War and directed by him in 1986 and nominated for an Academy Award, was inspired by his own experiences. Although the picture received positive reviews, it failed to find an audience and was thus a financial failure.

The next year, he directed “Platoon,” a picture that would go on to win an Oscar. In his series of documentaries on the Vietnam War, this was the pilot episode. Reviewers and moviegoers alike gave “Platoon” overwhelmingly positive reviews. Screenwriter for “Scarface,” starring Al Pacino, and “Year of the Dragon,” starring Mickey Rourke, among others.

Twenty-First Century Fox released the picture he directed, “Wall Street,” in 1987, and it won an Academy Award. As expected, the picture was praised by those in the know. Two years later, he directed “Born on the Fourth of July,” which won many awards, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe. The movie was the sequel to the first film in the Vietnam War film series. The movie, which was based on the best-selling autobiography of the same name, was a financial success.

A filmmaker who, in 1991, oversaw the production of “JFK,” a political thriller about the murder of President John F. Kennedy. It was his most contentious, ambitious, and successful picture to date, and it ended up winning two Oscars.

The 1993 Golden Globe-winning picture Heaven & Earth, which he directed, was the third and last film to focus on the Vietnam War. When Heaven and Earth Swapped Places is the memoir upon which the film is based. In comparison to his past directorial efforts, “Heaven & Earth” received a lukewarm reception.

He directed “Natural Born Killers,” which was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1994. The satirical criminal action flick spoofs the influence of the media on today’s society. In 1995, he oversaw the production of Nixon, a biopic on former U.S. President Richard Nixon. Four Academy Awards and a Golden Globe were submitted for this picture.

His movie “U-Turn,” adapted from John Ridley’s novel “Stray Dogs,” premiered in 1997. Multiple reviewers gave the film negative and positive reviews. A monumental historical drama he directed in 2004 called Alexander bombed in the United States. False information presented in the film was also a point of contention.

His 2006 drama picture “World Trade Center” was inspired by the September 11 attacks on New York’s World Trade Center. The picture was well received by the reviewers. His documentary ‘South of the Border,’ which he released in 2009 and debuted at the Venice Film Festival, is an excellent example of this. The documentary’s positive reception lasted its whole 102 minutes.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010), an American drama film he directed, was motivated by the 2008 financial crisis in the United States. He oversaw the production of the crime thriller ‘Savages,’ adapted from the book of the same name, in 2012. Box office receipts and critical reception were both around average.

The DGA recognized “Platoon” for “Outstanding Directing in a Feature Film.” Additionally, Channel 4 ranked it as the sixth “Greatest War Film of All Time.” There was a six-week stretch when “Born on the Fourth of July” was the highest-grossing film. Making a stunning $161,001,698 at the box office, the picture was a smashing hit.

In recognition of his contributions to the films Midnight Express, Platoon, and Born on the Fourth of July, he has been honored with three Academy Awards. He won the Golden Globe for “Best Director – Motion Picture” for the film “JFK” in 1992.
