Phil Knight Biography and Career:

Philip Hampson Knight, better known as “Buck,” was born on February 24, 1938. He is an American business owner and philanthropist. His name is also well-known. He was born in Oregon and became one of the co-founders and chairman emeritus of Nike, Inc. Before that; he was the chairman of the board and CEO of the company. As of October 2019, Knight was the 21st richest person in the world, according to Forbes. His estimated US$37.6 billion net worth made him the 21st richest person in the world. Besides that, he owns the film company Laika, which makes stop-motion animation movies.

Knight got degrees in his field from the University of Oregon and the Stanford Graduate School of Management. At the University of Oregon, he ran track for Bill Bowerman, who would later be one of his partners in starting Nike. Knight is a well-known philanthropist who has given hundreds of millions of dollars to the Oregon Health & Science University and the universities where he got his degrees. He has given about two billion dollars to the three organizations. Bill Knight, Phil Knight’s father, was a lawyer who started a newspaper. Lota (Hatfield) Knight, Phil Knight’s mother, was a teacher.

Phil was born in the Oregon city of Portland. Knight grew up in the Eastmoreland neighborhood of Portland, where he later went to high school and got his diploma from Cleveland High School. “His father wouldn’t give him a summer job at his newspaper, the now-defunct Oregon Journal, because he thought his son should find work on his own,” says one source.

“So he went to the rival Oregonian, where he worked the night shift tallying sports scores and ran the seven miles home every morning.” “When his father refused to give him a summer job at his newspaper [the now-defunct Oregon Journal] because he thought his son should find work on his own, Knight continued his studies at the University of Oregon (UO) in Eugene. He got a degree in journalism in 1959, worked as a sports writer for the Oregon Daily Emerald, and is a Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member. At the University of Oregon, he ran the mile in 4 and 10 seconds, his best time. In 1957, 1958, and 1959, he got varsity letters for his track work. He was best at things in the middle.

In 1977, Knight, Bowerman, and Geoff Hollister started Athletics West, an American running team. Knight was one of the first people to join the group. Before Blue Ribbon Sports, later renamed Nike, became successful, Knight worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for Coopers & Lybrand and then Price Waterhouse. At this time, there was no Nike. Knight became an accounting professor at Portland State University after that (PSU). Knight joined the military soon after he got his degree from the University of Oregon.

He did this for eight years, one year on active duty and the other seven years in the Army Reserve. After that, he went to the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he had to write a paper called “Can Japanese Sports Shoes Do to German Sports Shoes What Japanese Cameras Did to German Cameras?” for his small business class. This paper was the basis for Knight’s later decision to start a business selling running shoes. He attended Stanford University and earned his master’s degree in business administration in 1962.

Knight went on an adventure after he got the diploma that would take him all over the world. In November of 1962, he was in the Japanese city of Kobe. In that city, he found the Tiger brand of running shoes, which the Onitsuka Co. in Kobe made. Knight was impressed by how well-made the shoes were for how cheap they were, so he called Mr. Onitsuka and asked to meet with him.

By the end of the conference, Knight had successfully bought the rights to distribute Tiger in the western part of the United States. It would take more than a year to get the first Tiger samples to Knight, so he looked for work as an accountant in Portland during that time. When Knight finally got the sample shoes, he immediately sent two pairs to Bowerman at the University of Oregon.

He did this hoping to make a sale and get an influential person to back him. To Knight’s surprise, Bowerman bought a pair of Tiger shoes and offered to work with Knight as a business partner and give him ideas about improving product design. By shaking hands on January 25, 1964, the two men agreed to work together.

Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS), the company that later became Nike, was started on the same day. Knight’s first sales were made from a now-famous green Plymouth Valiant at track meetings all over the Pacific Northwest. Because of these early sales, Knight quit his job as an accountant in 1969 and worked at Blue Ribbon Sports full-time.

Jeff Johnson, the company’s first employee, suggested changing the company’s name from Blue Ribbon Sport to Nike in 1971. Johnson indicated that the company be called “Nike,” after the Greek goddess of victory who had wings. In 1971, the “swoosh” logo for Nike was made by Carolyn Davidson, who was in school for graphic design at the time.

She was paid $35. Now, many people think that the “swoosh” is one of the most important logos in the world. At the time, Knight said, “I don’t love it, but I think I could get used to it,” according to the Nike website. Because Davidson did so much for the Nike brand, the company gave her an undetermined number of shares of Nike stock in September 1983.
