Robert Patrick Biography and Career:
Robert Patrick was born in Texas to parents who moved around from job to job. He never went to the same school for an entire school year until he was a senior in high school in Roswell, New Mexico. Because his parents were always looking for work in different parts of the southwestern United States, they moved around a lot.
During his childhood, the only things that didn’t change were books, movies, and the radio. His mother taught him to love reading when he was young and helped him get a head start in school. Because they moved so often, he never made any lasting friends, and he had trouble in school the whole time he was there.
He decided to stop going to college after only two years. He had only seen a few school plays, so he didn’t get to see live theatre until the summer he worked as a dishwasher at the Kennebunkport Playhouse in Kennebunkport, Maine. He fell in love with the theatre during this time. On September 14, 1961, he stopped in New York City on his way back to Roswell from Maine. There, he found the Caffe Cino, which is known as the first Off-Off Broadway theatre. He stayed in New York and worked as a temporary typist while watching and taking part in dozens of plays.
One of these was So Long at the Fair by Lanford Wilson. He did any kind of work for free at the Caffe Cino, the La Mama ETC, and other early Off-Off Broadway theatres. He also worked for free at some of the first theatres off-Broadway. Before he wrote his first play, The Haunted Host, in 1964, he had already been writing poetry. Soon after that, the play was put on at Caffe Cino, and after that, he focused mostly on writing plays. Patrick’s name has been put on more than sixty of his plays.
In 1964, he put on his first play, called The Haunted Host, at Caffe Cino. Neil Flanagan was the best actor at the Caffe Cino, but Patrick didn’t give him the lead role because Flanagan had just played Lanford Wilson’s gay character Lady Bright. When other well-known Off-Off actors also turned down the part because they thought playing a gay character would hurt their careers, Patrick and fellow playwright William M. Hoffman acted in the play themselves.
Flanagan had just played Lady Bright, a gay character written by Lanford Wilson. He also worked at the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, one of the first theatres to be built outside of the Broadway area. In July 1965, Patrick’s play Mirage was put on at La MaMa under the direction of Neil Flanagan. In November 1965, Patrick was in charge of the production of BbAaNnGg. This benefit was held to raise money for electrical work that needed to be done at La MaMa’s 122 Second Avenue theatre.
A number of well-known Off-Off artists put on plays, spoken word, performance art, and films at the event. Show Business magazine gave him the “Best Play” award in 1969 for his work on Joyce Dynel, The Salvation Army, and Fog. In 1969, Marge Champion played the lead role in his play Camera Obscura, which was shown on PBS and picked for the famous playwright revue Collision Course.
During the 1960s, Patrick’s plays were performed more than 300 times in New York City alone. This made him a leader in both the off-off-Broadway and gay theatre scenes. In 1972, the publishing and licensing company Samuel French said that Patrick was “New York’s Most-Produced Playwright.” Patrick was in charge of putting on his play The Richest Girl in the World Finds Happiness at La MaMa in 1970.
In 1972, he directed his own plays Valentine Rainbow at La MaMa and The Golden Circle at 119 Spring Street. The same year was used for both of these shows. In 1971, 1972, and 1974, he was in charge of the Christmas shows at La MaMa. The first show was called La MaMa Christmas Show and took place in 1971. The second performance was called Play-by-Play and took place in 1972. The third performance, which took place in 1974, was called Play-by-Play: A Spectacle of Ourselves.
In 1973, he was in charge of the production of Paul Foster’s Silver Queen at La MaMa, which had music by John Braden. In 1973, Kennedy’s Children, a play by Patrick Kennedy, had a shady start in the basement of a pub theatre in Islington, London, called the King’s Head. The show was a big hit right away, and contracts were offered for it right away in London’s West End and other places around the world.
Patrick wrote three pieces for the first season of gay theatre in the UK, which happened in 1974 and was called “the first season.” In California, his play Cleaning House had its first performance in the summer of 1974. Harvey Fierstein first appeared on a professional stage as a man for the first time in 1974 in a Boston production of The Haunted Host.
After some time, Mr. Fierstein put a recording of Mr. Patrick’s “Pouf Positive” monologue on his “This Is Not Going to Be Pretty” compact disc. The movie “Pouf Positive,” which was made in 1989 and also directed by Dov Hechtman, was also made. Shirley Knight won the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play Tony Award in 1976 for her role in Kennedy’s Children on Broadway in 1975. She played the same character in the CBS version of the play from 1979.
Patrick went all over the world, from Anchorage to Cape Town, to see performances of Kennedy’s Children. As a member of the International Thespian Society, he spent 10 years going to high schools and high school theatre conferences all over the country to talk. In 1976, Marlo Thomas asked Patrick to write the play “My Cup Runneth Over”, especially for her and Lily Tomlin.
