Sam Elliott Biography and Career:

American actor Samuel Pack Elliott was born on August 9, 1944. Along with being nominated for an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, he has won other awards, including a National Board of Review Award. Samuel Pack Elliott was born on August 9, 1944, at the Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, California. He was the son of Henry Nelson Elliott, a predator control specialist for the Department of the Interior, and Glynn Mamie Elliott, a physical education teacher, and high school teacher.

Elliott’s parents are from El Paso, Texas, and he had a grandfather who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto as a physician. He and his family relocated to Portland, Oregon, when he was 13 years old, leaving California. Elliott started as a character actor since Westerns were a good fit for his physique, voice, and demeanor. In the episode “The Crystal Maze” by Judd for the Defense in 1969, he received his first television credit as Dan Kenyon.

Elliott portrayed Tom Keating in the 1977 television miniseries Aspen. Later, he costarred with Cheryl Ladd in A Death in California and acted an abusive wife-killer opposite Farrah Fawcett and his future wife Katharine Ross in the miniseries Murder in Texas. He appeared with Tom Selleck in the well-liked miniseries version of Louis L’Amour’s novel The Sacketts in 1979. In 1982, Elliott and Selleck collaborated once again on the Louis L’Amour adaptation of The Shadow Riders.

Elliott appeared in Mask with Cher in a supporting part, and in the holiday movie Prancer, he portrayed a tough-talking, rough-around-the-edges, but ultimately sympathetic father figure. He has appeared in several TV movies, including Buffalo Girls, in which he portrayed Wild Bill Hickok, and has made guest appearances on episodes including Felony Squad, Gunsmoke, Lancer, and Hawaii Five-O.

He played Renslo in the episode “Death Bait” of the TV series Lancer that same year. Between 1970 and 1971, he continued to feature in two more show episodes. In one of his first cinematic performances, he played a card player who observes the Sundance Kid practicing his shooting in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s opening scene.

Elliott played Doug Robert in numerous episodes of the famous Mission: Impossible during the 1970–1971 television season. Elliott made many appearances in Falstaff Beer ads, starting in 1972 as the cowboy Walker. Elliott was given the central part of Charles Wood in the 1975 television movie I Will Fight No More Forever, which dramatized Chief Joseph’s struggle against the American government’s forced relocation of his Nez Perce Indian tribe to an Idaho reservation.

He co-starred with Amy Irving, Kim Hunter, Clu Gulager, and Melanie Griffith in the 1976–1977 miniseries Once an Eagle, which was based on the same-named book by Anton Myrer. He played the primary role of Sam Damon. He also starred as Rick Carlson in the 1976 summer blockbuster Lifeguard, which served as his breakout role in a feature picture. After being asked to a reunion, he played a Southern California lifeguard who reexamines his life decisions. The movie was dubbed “unsatisfying” by Variety, which also said that Elliott, who has some beefcake value, “projects a figure who is largely a passive reactor rather than a guy in sure command of his destiny.”

Elliott attended David Douglas High School and lived there throughout his adolescent years, graduating in 1962. After high school, Elliott enrolled at the University of Oregon as a double major in English and psychology for two semesters before quitting. After a two-year program at Clark College in adjacent Vancouver, Washington, he moved back to Portland and was hired to play Big Jule in a Guys and Dolls theatrical performance.

According to the Vancouver Columbian newspaper, Elliott should work as an actor. Elliott returned to school at the University of Oregon and committed to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity after receiving his Clark diploma in 1965. After his father’s heart attack death, he discontinued his studies once again. Elliott moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s to pursue an acting career, against his father’s advice to seek a college education instead.

Elliott remembered, “He said to me, ‘You’ve got a snowball’s chance in hell of having a career in.'” “My father was a realist. He put forth a lot of effort. I appreciate him daily for having a work ethic I have modeled mine after.” Elliott participated in the California Air National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing at Van Nuys Airport before the unit relocated to Channel Islands Air National Guard Station while pursuing his acting studies.

Elliott is recognized for his distinctively lanky build, thick mustache, and booming voice. To start his cinematic career, he had supporting roles in The Way West, Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid, and season five of Mission: Impossible. He also made cameo appearances on television in Gunsmoke, Murder in Texas, and The Shadow Riders. He played the lead in Frogs. His breakout performance was in the dramatic Lifeguard. The Quick and the Dead and Conagher, both adaptations of Louis L’Amour, were among his subsequent roles.

For the latter, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film. For Buffalo Girls, he was nominated for his second Golden Globe and first Primetime Emmy Award. As John Buford in the historical drama Gettysburg and Virgil Earp in the Western Tombstone, among other roles from the early 1990s. He portrayed the Stranger in The Big Lebowski in 1998.

Elliott had cameo appearances in the superhero movies Hulk and Ghost Rider and the drama. We Were Soldiers in the 2000s. He had a Critics’ Choice Television Award-winning cameo appearance on the Justified series in 2015, and in 2016 he started playing the lead in the Netflix series The Ranch. Later, he played the information in the comedy-drama The Hero.

Elliott received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, and the National Board of Review Award for his performance in the musical drama A Star Is Born.
