Samuel Pack Elliott was born on August 9, 1944, at the Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, California. He was the son of Henry Nelson Elliott, a predator control specialist for the Department of the Interior, and Glynn Mamie Elliott, a physical education teacher, and high school teacher.
Elliott’s parents are from El Paso, Texas, and he had a grandfather who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto as a physician. He and his family relocated to Portland, Oregon, when he was 13 years old, leaving California. Elliott started as a character actor since Westerns were a good fit for his physique, voice, and demeanor. In the episode “The Crystal Maze” by Judd for the Defense in 1969, he received his first television credit as Dan Kenyon.
Elliott portrayed Tom Keating in the 1977 television miniseries Aspen. Later, he costarred with Cheryl Ladd in A Death in California and acted an abusive wife-killer opposite Farrah Fawcett and his future wife Katharine Ross in the miniseries Murder in Texas. He appeared with Tom Selleck in the well-liked miniseries version of Louis L’Amour’s novel The Sacketts in 1979. In 1982, Elliott and Selleck collaborated once again on the Louis L’Amour adaptation of The Shadow Riders.
Elliott appeared in Mask with Cher in a supporting part, and in the holiday movie Prancer, he portrayed a tough-talking, rough-around-the-edges, but ultimately sympathetic father figure. He has appeared in several TV movies, including Buffalo Girls, in which he portrayed Wild Bill Hickok, and has made guest appearances on episodes including Felony Squad, Gunsmoke, Lancer, and Hawaii Five-O.
He played Renslo in the episode “Death Bait” of the TV series Lancer that same year. Between 1970 and 1971, he continued to feature in two more show episodes. Elliott attended David Douglas High School and lived there throughout his adolescent years, graduating in 1962. After high school, Elliott enrolled at the University of Oregon as a double major in English and psychology for two semesters before quitting. I appreciate him daily for having a work ethic I have modeled mine after.” Elliott participated in the California Air National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing at Van Nuys Airport before the unit relocated to Channel Islands Air National Guard Station while pursuing his acting studies.
