Sam Johnstone Biography and Career:
Sam Johnstone started his professional career as a member of the Manchester United academy and was a member of the club for a total of seven years. In spite of this, he spent all seven of those seasons on loan at a total of seven different teams in the English Football League.
He signed with West Bromwich Albion in 2018 and worked his way into the England squad, eventually earning his debut with the national team in 2021. After spending the previous four years with the Baggies, Johnstone made the move to Crystal Palace on a free transfer in June of 2021.
Johnstone joined the Manchester United Academy for the 2010–11 season, but by July of the following year, he was on his way to Oldham Athletic on a month-long loan. On September 9, 2011, Johnstone entered into a similar arrangement with Scunthorpe United, and the loan was extended until January of the following year. In March of 2013, Johnstone accepted a loan to play for Walsall for the remaining games of the season. In the first three games he played in, he had three clean sheets in a row. However, only a few months later, Johnstone was transferring again, this time to Yeovil Town, which competes in the Championship. This lasted for a total of three months.
His career as a club-hopper continued in January of 2014 when he went to Doncaster Rovers, where he stayed for a year and appeared in a combined total of 28 games over the course of two seasons. One year after signing with Doncaster, Johnstone returned to his hometown club, Preston North End, on loan for the remainder of the 2014-2015 season. In the play-off final in 2015, when his team played against Swindon, he had a perfect defensive performance and helped his team secure a promotion to the Championship.
The Red Devils invited Johnstone to join them on their pre-season tour of the United States the following year, which was Johnstone’s first season with the team. After hearing rumors that David De Gea would be moving to Real Madrid, Johnstone was called on the bench for the opening game of the 2015–16 season, which was played against Tottenham Hotspur. He performed as the club’s backup goalkeeper at that time. Following De Gea’s announcement that he would be staying at United for the foreseeable future, Johnstone made his way back to North End on loan.
Johnstone received an extension to his contract with Manchester United on October 16, 2016, which would now keep him with the club until June 2018. Johnstone was on the move once again on January 5, 2017, when it was announced that he will be joining Aston Villa of the Championship on loan until the conclusion of the 2016-2017 campaign. This was then expanded to encompass the whole of the ensuing campaign as well.
On July 3, 2018, Johnstone announced his departure from Manchester United and signed a four-year deal with West Bromwich Albion for a cost that was reportedly about £6.5 million. Johnstone will be playing for West Bromwich Albion.
Johnstone was a rock in goal for the Baggies, notably in the 2019/20 season when he preserved 14 clean sheets to assist his club to achieve automatic promotion to the Premier League. In spite of the criticism from the supporters, Johnstone was a rock in goal for the Baggies. Johnstone was a productive goalkeeper for West Brom despite the club’s demotion during the 2020/21 season, in which the team finished in the bottom two divisions.
As a result of his outstanding play, he was named both the Supporter’s Player of the Year and the Player’s Player of the Year. In addition, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) honored him as a Community Champion for his efforts outside of the sport. Before ultimately earning his first full England cap, Johnstone competed for England at the under-16, under-17, under-19, and under-20 levels while representing those age groups.
At the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he was selected to be a part of England’s 21-man team to compete. After making his debut in the first match of the competition, he went on to participate in all three of England’s group stage losses, which ultimately led to the team’s elimination. Johnstone was given a call-up to the England first team in March 2021 as a result of his strong play for West Bromwich Albion during the 2020-21 season. As a result of an injury sustained by Nick Pope, Johnson was selected for the 26-man team that will compete in Euro 2020. On June 6, he made his debut for the team in a pre-tournament match against Romania that was played at the Riverside Stadium.
However, due to the fact that Jordan Pickford was firmly in command of the number one shirt for the Three Lions, Johnstone did not play any minutes at all throughout the Euro 2020 tournament. Since Euro 2020, Johnstone has appeared in two World Cup qualifying matches for England, both of which were played against Andorra. Both of these matches were won by England.
In the second half, he became the first goalie since Asmir Begovic in 2017 to assist a goal in a World Cup qualifying match. His throw set up Jack Grealish for England’s fifth and final goal, making him the first goalkeeper since Begovic to do so.
Johnstone is part of a soccer-playing family, since his father, Glenn Johnstone, was a player for Preston North End back in the 1990s. His younger brother Max played for the junior squad of Manchester United before joining for the Scottish club St. Johnstone in July of 2019. The average weekly salary for Johnstone during his West Bromwich Albion contract was £32,500, bringing the total value of the deal to £6.7 million over four years.
Sam Johnstone’s News
He was recalled from his loan at Notts County in the National League in January, after having spent the first half of this season playing for another team. He made a total of 11 games for the Magpies and contributed three clean sheets, which helped the team get closer to making the playoffs. After returning to Sunderland, he was able to get back into the first team thanks to the experience he gained there, and he has since established himself as a regular starter there.
And now, as a result of all of his hard work, the Black Cats are reportedly looking into the possibility of signing him to a contract that would keep him. Sunderland will have a successful campaign in their return to the Championship in the next season. The previous week, they won the League One play-off final against Wycombe with a score of 2-0, securing their spot in the next level of competition. However, since that time, the club has revealed that sixteen players would be leaving when their current contracts end the following month.
