Shakin’ Stevens Biography and Career:

Welsh singer-songwriter Michael Barratt, better known by his stage name Shakin’ Stevens, was born on March 4th, 1948. In the 1980s, he was the singles artist with the highest sales in the UK. Although he started recording and performing in the late 1960s, his mainstream breakthrough didn’t start until 1980.

His most popular songs were throwback smashes that resembled 1950s rock and roll and pop. Apart from his Christmas song, which has returned to the UK Singles Chart every December since 2007, Stevens has charted 33 Top 40 hit singles in the UK alone, including the four chart-topping hits “This Ole House,” “Green Door,” “Oh Julie,” and “Merry Christmas Everyone.” His last Top 40 single was “Trouble” in 2005.

Michael Barratt, the youngest of Jack and May Barratt’s eleven children, would eventually take on the stage moniker “Shakin’ Stevens”. His father, a veteran of the First World War who had previously worked as a coal miner, was employed in the building trade by 1948.

The eldest of his siblings was born in the middle of the 1920s, and some of the oldest siblings of Michael Barratt were already married and raising children when he was born. At the age of 75, Jack Barratt passed away in 1972. At the age of 83, May Barratt passed away in 1984.

He was born and raised in Ely, Cardiff, and as a teenager in the middle of the 1960s, he created his first rudimentary rock and roll band with classmates, serving as its frontman and singer. The short-lived band, once known as the Olympics and later the Cossacks, changed their name to the Denims and played shows in the Cardiff and South Wales region.

Stevens performed at YCL events in the late 1960s, which helped him establish his connection to the YCL, the Communist Party of Great Britain’s youth wing. At the time, the YCL was linked to a number of influential musicians, including Pete Townshend.

Stevens has said that this was caused by the fact that the person in charge of scheduling the band’s shows was also a member of the group. His formal job title was milkman in the late 1960s, and he resided in an apartment in an office building in central Cardiff.

A few years later, the office building was destroyed. Barratt played on the weekends at bars and clubs while also working as an upholsterer and milkman. After initially supporting them as a fan and later as a sporadic guest vocalist, Barratt became the lead singer of the Backbeats, a band from Penarth, Wales, that had been around since 1958.

Paul “Legs” Barrett, a music promoter from South Wales, noticed him and suggested rebranding the band as a rock and roll group with a 1950s vibe. When it came time to pick a stage name, Michael Barratt consented to borrow Shakin’ Stevens from an old friend from high school, Steven Vanderwalker.

When they were offered a support spot for the Rolling Stones in December 1969, the band fronting the newly renamed Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets had an early break. The group struggled to find success, at least in their native Great Britain.

And despite signing a recording deal with Parlophone Records the following year and releasing an album with the optimistically and prematurely titled A Legend that was produced by Dave Edmunds. However, they had several hit singles in other countries and released three albums on the Dutch Pink Elephant label.

In between UK shows, the band went on tour in Germany, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Jack Good had personally invited “Shaky,” as he was also known at the time, to attend a London audition for his intended new West End musical Elvis in 1977, seven years after Jack had first saw him performing and travelling nonstop.

Shaky was cast in one of the lead roles, portraying Elvis in his prime, charting his army and film star years, with young actor Tim Whitnall covering the earlier formative years and veteran 1960s singer P.J. Proby taking over the part for Elvis’s ‘Las Vegas’ years. Three actors were to portray Elvis’s life throughout the course of the show.

The remaining members of the Sunsets waited in South Wales, performing on occasion with drummer Robert ‘Rockin Louis’ Llewellyn filling in as leader, but they fully expected Stevens to rejoin the group and resume touring following the intended brief six-month run of the show.

The subsequent events, however, exceeded the expectations. The media-savvy Jack Good saw to it that the audition procedure as well as the first few episodes of the show were extensively and frequently covered by British daily newspapers and television programs.

Stevens signed his most fruitful management contract with Freya Miller in late 1979, and she immediately counseled him to end his relationship with the Sunsets and focus on pursuing a more lucrative solo career. Stevens’ first UK chart-topping number 1 came in 1981 under Miller’s guidance with “This Ole House.”

Stevens would go on to have 10 more songs reach the top five, including three number one hits with “Green Door,” “Oh Julie,” and “Merry Christmas Everyone.” “You Drive Me Crazy” and “A Love Worth Waiting For” respectively peaked at number 2 in 1981 and 1984.

Hank Marvin played guitar on Stevens’ 1984 song “Teardrops,” which peaked at No. 5 in the UK. Since then, Stevens has frequently used renowned musicians on his records, including Albert Lee, Roger Taylor, and Bonnie Tyler. His album Shaky, which peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart, was another success on the charts.

Stevens reunited with previous producer Dave Edmunds in the middle of the 1980s to make the album Lipstick, Powder and Paint and the holiday classic “Merry Christmas Everyone,” which reached number one in 1985. Because he was on tour when it was recorded.

He was unable to contribute to Band Aid’s massively popular charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” hence its original scheduled release date was advanced by a year to avoid competing with it. Author Kris Griffiths stated in a piece for Record Collector magazine: “This was Shaky at the very height of his talents and, maybe, the breaking-point of marketing overkill from which there is only decline.

There was a cost associated with such concentrated commercial success and ubiquity. Stevens wed Carole Dunn in October 1967; their 42-year marriage ended in divorce in 2009. Together, they gave birth to three children: Paula, Jason, and Dean, two sons.

Stevens later started dating his manager Sue Davies after they divorced, and he attributes her with saving his life when he had a heart attack in July 2010.
