Tavis Smiley Biography and Career:

Tavis Smiley is a well-known American talk show presenter, journalist, and political commentator. He was born on September 13, 1964, in Gulfport, Mississippi, in the United States.

Smiley spent his childhood in the area around Kokomo, Indiana, and went to school at Indiana University in Bloomington before dropping out in 1988 to take a job working for Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles. (He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the year 2003.)

It was in 1996 when Smiley began his career as a political analyst on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and as the anchor of BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley on the Black Entertainment Television cable network that he rose to the level of a nationally recognized broadcaster. In addition to this, his interviews started to air on major television networks such as ABC, NBC, and CNN.

Smiley started his role as host of The Tavis Smiley Show on National Public Radio in 2001. However, he left the position three years later because he believed the network had not made sufficient efforts to reach out to a wide audience.

The next year, though, he made his way back into the airways of public radio with a brand new program broadcast on Public Radio International. Following his graduation from high school, he continued his education at Indiana University, where he earned a degree in Public Affairs and became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Since he did not have enough credits to graduate at the time, he left the university in 1988 to begin working for Tom Bradley, but in 2003 he was forced to go back and complete his degree. Twelve years after graduating from university, he decided to pursue a career in politics by running for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council and leading the campaign himself. After developing a friendship with the show’s host, Tom Joyner, he began appearing as a regular commentator on “the Tom Joyner Morning Show” in the year 1996.
