Theresa May Biography and Career:

Theresa May, full name Theresa Mary May, née Theresa Mary Brasier, (born October 1, 1956, Eastbourne, Sussex, England), the British politician who became the second woman prime minister of the United Kingdom in British history in July 2016 after succeeding David Cameron as leader of the Conservative Party. She is the daughter of the late Theresa Mary Brasier.

Theresa Brasier, the only child of an Anglican clergyman, grew up in the remote county of Oxfordshire. During her schooling, she attended both public and private institutions before enrolling in the University of Oxford, where she majored in geography. Brasier met her future husband, Philip May, at an Oxford dance when she was introduced by another student, Benazir Bhutto, who would go on to become Pakistan’s prime minister. Both she and her spouse pursued jobs in the financial industry. She began her career at the Bank of England before joining the Association for Payment Clearing Services, where she worked as the head of the European Issues Unit and as a senior consultant on international affairs until retiring in 2013.

May started her political career as a councilor in the London borough of Merton, where she served until she was elected to the post of Prime Minister. May was elected to represent Maidenhead in the House of Commons after being unsuccessful as a Conservative candidate for the House of Commons twice. The shadow secretary of state for education and employment, as well as shadow secretary of state for transport, local government, and the regions, shadow secretary of state for the family, shadow secretary of state for culture, media, and sport, as well as shadow leader of Parliament, rose quickly from the backbenches to the frontbenches.

In May, she became the first woman to serve as chair of the Conservative Party, and in that role, she worked to boost the number of female Conservative MPs and modernize the party, claiming that it had become known as the “ugly party” because of its policies. Meanwhile, May was garnering recognition for her fashionable footwear as she established a reputation for herself as a moralistic no-nonsense lawmaker and strong negotiator.

May was appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department by Prime Minister David Cameron when he became Prime Minister in. May, who was the longest-serving home secretary in more than a century, campaigned for immigration restrictions and was critical of the police. She joined Cameron in rejecting the “Brexit” referendum (British withdrawal from the European Union).

When Cameron announced his impending departure in June, after the national referendum in which voters voted to leave the European Union, it looked probable that Boris Johnson, the leading spokesperson for the “Leave” campaign, would be appointed as the next Conservative leader. Johnson, on the other hand, decided to withdraw from the campaign after losing the backing of a number of major backers. May was chosen from a pool of four other candidates and survived a round of winnowing votes by Conservative members of Parliament to emerge alongside Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom as the final candidates, who will be decided by general party members by September 9. Leadsom withdrew her candidacy almost immediately after it was announced, citing a scandal regarding statements she had made about parenting as a requirement for political leadership (May had no children). All of this laid the groundwork for May to rapidly ascend to the position of Conservative Party leader, and she was appointed Prime Minister on July 13, 2016.

May, who had promised to see Brexit through to completion, went about her business with caution and deliberate precision. When the High Court decided in November 2016 that she could not activate Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, so commencing discussions on Britain’s withdrawal from the EU, without first obtaining agreement from Parliament, she was forced to abandon her plans for a resounding defeat. The Supreme Court of the United States dismissed her government’s appeal of the verdict in January 2017.

In February, the House of Commons passed a bill granting her that approval; however, when the bill returned to the Commons from the House of Lords in March, it was laden with amendments, including one calling for a greater role for Parliament in the negotiations with the EU and another ensuring that EU citizens currently residing in the United Kingdom would be able to stay. May objected to the second idea if it was not coupled with a comparable assurance for British residents residing in other EU member states.
