Tim Sweeney Biography and Career:

Tim Dean Sweeney is an American billionaire businessman, programmer for video games, and environmentalist. People know him as the founder and CEO of Epic Games and the person who made Unreal Engine, a platform for making video games. In 1970, Sweeney was born. Sweeney grew up in Potomac, Maryland, and was the youngest of three brothers. There, he was born. He said that he took apart a lawnmower when he was only five or six years old and that he later built his own go-kart.

From a young age, he liked to play around with mechanical and electrical gadgets, and he said that he did. Sweeney said that he spent more than 10,000 hours between the ages of 11 and 15 teaching himself how to code by reading information on internet bulletin boards. He made a lot of games during this time, but he didn’t show them to anyone else. As a teenager, he started his own business and mowed the lawns of rich people in the area for half the price of professional services. This was a lot more money than he was making working at a local hardware store. His older brother, who was also an entrepreneur, taught him how to start a business.

Sweeney went to the University of Maryland in the years around 1989 to get a degree in mechanical engineering, even though he was still very interested in computers. Around this time, his father, who had worked for the Defense Mapping Agency, gave him an IBM Personal Computer/AT as a gift. Sweeney tried to run a successful computer consulting business called Potomac Computer Systems out of the basement of the house where he grew up.

The business failed, though, and Sweeney gave up on it. After a while, Sweeney had the idea of making games that could be sold and programming them on nights and weekends when he wasn’t working as a teacher. Before he could write the code for the game, he had to build a text editor that used the PASCAL programming language.

This made him think about how he could make a game out of the text editor itself. This was the building block for ZZT. He asked his college classmates and people in his area what they thought, and he knew it was something he could sell to other people who used computers. Sweeney used the shareware model to figure out how to get the game out there. He wrote to Scott Miller of Apogee Software, Ltd., which was a well-known shareware publisher at the time, and asked for advice on how to get ZZT out there.

He brought Potomac Computer Systems back to life so he could market ZZT and asked his father for help with mail orders. Sweeney decided to make making games his job when ZZT became popular enough to sell a few copies every day for a total of around $100 per day. The owner of Potomac Computer Systems thought that Epic MegaGames would be a better name for the video game company he was starting, so he changed the name.

Sweeney started working on his next game, which was going to be called “Jill of the Jungle,” after he finished “ZZT,” but he quickly realized that he didn’t have the skills to finish it by himself. He put together a team of four people to help him finish the game by the middle of 1992. Sweeney tried to find a business partner for Epic MegaGames so the company could keep growing.

Mark Rein had just been fired from his job at id Software when he found him. Rein was very important to the growth and management of the company. Because of the growth of the company, Sweeney couldn’t get his degree because he was short one credit. Sweeney later worked on the Unreal Engine, which was used in the 1998 first-person shooter video game Unreal and a number of other games. After Unreal did so well, the company changed its name to Epic Games and moved its headquarters to North Carolina in 1999. Sweeney is the person who came up with many patents for computer software.

Since the real estate market crashed in 2008, Sweeney has used his money to buy huge amounts of land in North Carolina in order to protect the state’s native plants and animals. As of the end of 2019, he has successfully reclaimed 50,000 acres of forest land in the state. This includes the 7,000-acre Box Creek Wilderness, which is home to more than 130 rare and endangered plant and animal species. After winning a lawsuit against a power company that wanted to build a transmission line through the land, Sweeney, who bought Box Creek Wilderness for $15 million, gave the conservation easement to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
