Whoopi Goldberg Biography and Career:

Originally known as Caryn Elaine Johnson, Whoopi Goldberg is the daughter of Emma Johnson and Robert James Johnson. As a child, her mother worked as a nurse and her father was a pastor. The Chelsea-Elliot Houses were her mother’s home when her father broke up the family when she was young. She went to school until she was a teenager and then dropped out. She began her acting career at an early age. When she appeared on stage, people congratulated her by saying she looked like a whoopee cushion.

To seem more Jewish, she changed her surname to Goldberg and assumed the stage name Whoopi. She kept her stage name, Whoopi Goldberg, for the remainder of her life as her stage name. She’s been married and divorced three times in her life. In her first marriage, she had a daughter with Alvin Martin. After divorcing him, she married David Claessen, but the marriage lasted only a few months until she wed Lyle Trachtenberg. After a year, they broke up. Frank Langella and Ted Danson are two of the men she has had a relationship with.

She has stated that she was a “high-functioning” drug user in the beginning. She had dyslexia as well. She has been a vocal advocate for the rights of homosexuals and lesbians. Aside from raising awareness about AIDS, she has worked with transgender and bisexual people and advocated for their rights. For the first time in Academy history, an African-American woman has won an Academy Award for best-supporting actress. On top of that, she has dyslexia. She relocated to California in 1974 and resided in different locations, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, for the rest of her life.

As a stand-up comedian and actress, she refined both of her crafts during this time. In a one-woman act, she rose to stardom as the comedienne Mos Mabley. For the same reason, she got an award. She returned to New York soon after and began acting lessons with Uta Hagen. In William Farley’s film ‘Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away,’ she made her screen debut. “The Spook Act” was the name of her 1983 one-woman show. Although the show dealt with racial issues, its approach to the subject was refreshing.

The show was a big hit with the crowd! This was followed by other off-Broadway performances such as “Little Girl,” a play about a black girl who is enamored with the color blonde on her hair, and “Fontaine,” a play about a junkie who also happens to be a doctorate-holding literary scholar. Director Mike Nicholas was delighted by the inventiveness and wit of her performances, and so he offered to bring ‘The Spook Show’ to Broadway. In both the commercial and critical arenas, the 156-performance run of the show was a huge success.

She won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for the album. Hollywood’s power brokers took notice of her captivating performance and the show’s overwhelmingly positive feedback. In 1985, she landed a role in Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple,” which was directed by the director himself. In addition to 11 Academy Award nominations, the film earned her her first Golden Globe nod. Her big break came with ‘The Color Purple,’ which catapulted her into the spotlight and helped begin her career.

‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’, ‘Burglar,’ ‘Fatal Beauty and ‘The Telephone’ were some of the films that followed. While each of her subsequent projects was a minor financial success, none of them came close to matching her prior venture’s colossal triumph. The albums “Clara’s Heart” and “Homer & Eddie,” released in 1988 and 1989, respectively, marked the end of the 1980s for her. Both films were well-received by critics. She was also a part of HBO’s Comic Relief programs. She starred in the sitcom ‘Bagdad Cafe’ at the beginning of the 1990s.

She then released ‘The Long Walk Home’ and ‘Ghost,’ her next two albums. After playing a civil rights activist in the former, she played a psychic in the latter and won an Academy Award and another Golden Globe. In the years that followed, she starred in such films as ‘Sister Act,’ ‘The Player,’ ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,’ and ‘Made in America.’ As Guinan in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ she also appeared in two subsequent Star Trek films.

In addition to performing in films, she made her name on television with her talk show, ‘The Whoopi Goldberg Show’. During the course of the show, she would sit down one-on-one with high-profile politicians and movie stars. A total of 200 episodes were shown when the show was canceled in 2012. In 1994, she became the first African-American woman to host the Academy Awards. In 1996, 1999, and 2002, she did it again. Between then and now, she appeared in a slew of films such as “Corrina, Corrina,” “Boys on the Side,” “Moonlight,” “Valentino,” “Bogus,” “Eddie.”

With the help of ghostwriter Daniel Paisner, she co-wrote the book, ‘Book,’ which was published in 2012. It was a compilation of short stories, each with its own unique point of view. Hollywood Squares, a celebrity game show that she appeared on in 1998, won her two Emmys in a row for her performance on the show. In 2007, she was a co-host and moderator on the daytime talk show ‘The View,’ which catapulted her career once more.

With less of a bang than Rosie O’Donnell’s debut, the show quickly gained steam and proceeded on to greater heights. Goldberg also hosted ‘Wake Up With Whoopi’, a nationally syndicated morning radio talk and entertainment show, from August 2006 to March 2008. She has cut back on her acting in recent years in order to devote more time to her work as a human rights activist. She recently appeared as Jane Marsh in an episode of ‘The Middle,’ as a guest star. ‘Indecisive,’ an indie short film, also included her.
