Elena Kagan Biography and Career:

Her father was a prominent partner at the Manhattan law firm Kagan & Lubic, working largely with tenant groups.

Hunter College High School, which she later considered as a pivotal experience in her life, was attended by Kagan. “It was a pretty great thing to be a smart girl, as opposed to some other, different kind,” she explains.

In 1981, Kagan graduated from Princeton with a bachelor’s degree in summa cum laude. She also awarded her alma mater’s Daniel M. Sachs Graduation Fellowship to study at Worcester College in Oxford, England. In 1983 she received a master’s degree in philosophy from Worcester before transferring to Harvard Law School immediately.

The following year, for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the US Supreme Court, she began another employment as clerk. This time. During this time, she also worked for Michael Dukakis’ 1988 presidential campaign, but after Dukakis lost his candidacy, Kagan returned to the private sector to work as an associate at the Washington D.C. law firm Williams & Connolly.

Kagan came back to academia after three years at Williams & Connolly – this time as a professor. She began teaching at the Law School of the University of Chicago in 1991 and was an associate professor of law in 1995. That same year, Kagan quit school to work for President Bill Clinton as Associate Counsel. Kagan was promoted multiple times during her four years at the White House. First, she became the Deputy Assistant to the Chair for Domestic Policy and subsequently the Deputy Director of the Domestic Policies Council.

Before Clinton departed office, he appointed Kagan to serve on the D.C. circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. Her appointment with the Senate Judicial Committee, however, was postponed and Kagan returned to higher education in 1999. Starting as Harvard Law’s visiting professor, Kagan moved from professor in 2001 to doctor in 2003 swiftly. Kagan has made great improvements in the school during her five years as Harvard Law Dean, including faculty growth, programme modifications and the building of new campus facilities.
After Barack Obama, a fellow Harvard alumnus, won the 2008 presidential election, he chose Kagan as the general solicitor. In January 2009, Kagan was endorsed by the prior general applicants and approved by the U.S. Senate on 19 March 2009. She became the first woman to serve as solicitor general of the United States with her confirmation.

Just a year after she was confirmed as Attorney General, President Obama appointed Kagan to replace Justice John Paul Stevens after his retirement at the Supreme Court. She was confirmed by the Senate with 63-37 votes on 5 August 2010, making her the fourth woman to sit on the top court. At the age of 50, she became the youngest member of the current court and the only court to have no previous judicial experience.
